It was regretfully laundry day. Nate’s clothes have been staring at him for almost two weeks and so he did what any responsible adult would do and gathered them all into a basket and headed to the nearest laundry mat. Like everything in Peach Hollow, it came with a pun in its name. The Lost Sock. He opened the door and went towards the nearest empty washer and began to throw his clothes inside. He also threw in soap and used his last remaining quarters to turn on the machine. He moved to pull himself up on top of a dryer and unlocked his phone to set a timer. He groaned. “the worst part of doing laundry is the waiting.” He announced to the nearest person, he was pretty sure he had seen them around Tangerine Towers before but he’d never gotten to know them.

"It's you...it has always been you."

Taekwoon raised the cigarette to his mouth, holding it between his lips for a moment before slowing inhaling. You watched carefully as his chest rose and sank as he blew the smoke into the cold winter air, lowering his arm back down to rest on the railing that he was leaning up against. 

You couldn’t quite remember exactly how you had ended up here on Taekwoon’s balcony, watching him smoke a cigarette as you sipped on the steaming cup of coffee in your hands. Your poor memory may have been from the amount of alcohol in your system, or simply because you were just too flustered from being in his presence. It had been a while.

"How are you?" he asked suddenly. You knew the question was sincere, even though his voice was monotone and there was a familiar lack of eye contact. He wouldn’t ask if he didn’t care.

"I’m well," you answered honestly, your index finger swirling around the rim of the coffee mug nervously. "what about you?"

Taekwoon looked down at the cigarette tucked loosely between his fingers, realized that he had finished it off, and stubbed it out on the railing. He then nodded in response to your question, looking back out at the expanse of night sky in front of him.

"I’ve been quite happy, actually." he said quietly, letting a short sigh escape his slightly parted lips. "My life is going where I want it to go, with my career and such."

"Ah," you breathed, forcing a small smile onto your lips. "That’s wonderful. I’m happy for you, I really am." Your words the biggest lie you had ever told, your heart feeling heavy and your head feeling light. You grabbed onto the railing in front of you to steady yourself, catching yourself from collapsing under the weight of your weak interior.

"Yes, it is. Thank you." Taekwoon nodded, turning to you. "Would you like to head back inside-"

"Do you love anyone, Taekwoon?" The words escaped your mouth before even going through your head first, as if your heart had chosen to speak for itself. You could feel your throat closing up as your stared into Taekwoon’s wide eyes, wishing that his answer would never have to come, wishing that you could run now and never have to hear it. But your legs were too weak, your knees ready to collapse from underneath you. You couldn’t move an inch.

Taekwoon nodded, pursing his lips. “I do.” he answered quietly, but so surely. He was in love, deeply in love. You could see it in his eyes, the way they fell slightly closed at just the thought of his love. You couldn’t breathe.

"That - uh - that’s great." you stuttered, trying to collect yourself as best as you could though you knew that it was obvious you were becoming a mess over two simple words. "I’m happy for you, and for her. She’s…she’s a lucky girl." You choked on your words, lowering your head in case tears decided to spill from your eyes. "I should go."

You let go of the railing, only to lean your other hand against the wall, using it as support for your numbing body as you hurried through the balcony door and back into the dimly-lit apartment. Before you could release your hand from the door frame, though, Taekwoon covered it with his own.

"It’s you." he said softly, the words slipping so smoothly off his tongue that you knew they had to be true. "It has always been you."
