At this point, you’re gasping for air. She gets up, and most of her creations retreat alongside her. One remains. Isabela gives you one final glare, before walking straight past you. You pant, every gulp of air tasting sweet. A smile stretches on your lips as you push yourself up with shaky arms. “So... You like me...?”

The branch around your neck squeezes hard, and sprouts a leaf that tickles your skin.

“Sit still.”

Isabela’s voice lacks its usual sting as she holds your face steady with one hand, applying makeup with the other. Or ‘hiding your many imperfections’, as she likes to call it. She’s too focused to be insulting. Her hand moves with the kind of ease that only comes from years of practice. But there’s still a difference between doing your own makeup and someone else’s, so she ends up pulling back with a frown more than once.

You don’t care how many times she has to redo it. When you’re this close to her, you can take in her sweet smell without looking weird. (It’s flowers. Of course she smells like flowers. You can’t be the only one it draws in.) Her hands are warm against your skin (so soft), and you can stare at her face without any excuse. There’s no closer you could get to pure bliss. Even if she’s only being gentle with her words and touch so as to not ruin her hard work, you can pretend.

Her eyes roam over your face to inspect her progress, and you melt further. You hold her gaze, and when she meets it, her face relaxes. No smile, but no sneer either. Her hand slides down from your chin, fingers ghosting over your neck, and your breath hitches. She pulls her arm back as if burnt and takes a couple of steps back, her expression twisting into a more familiar expression. A vine pushes against your back so you’re forced out of your chair. She makes no attempt to help you, leaving you to trip over your feet and fall on your hands and knees. You groan loudly in pain.

“Oh, come on. Don’t pretend you weren’t begging for a punishment earlier, with all your sniffing. Really, I shouldn’t have indulged you, but... This works. At my feet is where you belong.” She quite literally turns up her nose at you. “Sometimes I forget you’re like that. But then I have to help you, because you can’t do anything on your own… And what do I get? A shivering, panting mess who only makes my job harder. You’re all excited and fidgety when she first lets you in your room- It has to mean she’s starting to warm up to you, right? But she just rolls her eyes as you look around in awe, carefully stepping so you don’t put too much weight on the flowers blossoming underneath your feet. Isabela’s walking a pace too fast so when you’ve returned to your senses, you need to hurry to catch up. You end up tripping over seemingly nothing, and she clicks her tongue. Only she knows it’s her fault. It’s hard to notice a bulb sprouting right beneath your feet.

Can you do nothing on your own? Nothing at all? You lift your head up to be met by her narrowed eyes. (Even like that, she’s still so pretty...) She’s looming over you, and your mouth twists into a sheepish smile before you sputter out an apology. Isabela brushes you off, not seeming any happier. When you try to get up, she shakes her head. You’re not killing any more of her flowers by, um... Being yourself? Please. A vine wraps itself around your stomach and lifts you in the air, too far away from the ground to get down easily. With the way she’s holding you, you can really only dangle in the air with yoru body folded over the vine. Legs on one side, arms and face on the other. It’s uncomfortable, to say the least. Isabela mutters something about regretting all of this already. Your face burns with humiliation. (Or is that the blood forcefully rushing to your head...?) 

Isabela could use more vines to keep your body upright, but she doesn’t. As a result, the strain on your muscles is near unbearable as she moves you around alongside her. She drops herself down on her bed, and leaves you hanging. Your sides burn and your body is shaking. You can’t look at her for more than a few seconds. It’s too painful to keep your neck up for more than that, but she’s just... Relaxing on her bed. You’re not even worth a single glance, it seems. Affection: How do they show their love and affection? How intense would it get?

‘Mean’ is in the title, isn’t it? You have to pick apart your interactions to find them, but there are seedlings of affection. The most striking one is that she holds you to the same standards as herself. She’s constantly fixing your appearance, commenting on how to behave better and, occasionally, gifting you new clothes. If she didn’t want to spend any more time with you, she could use your ‘flaws’ to ditch you once and for all. Instead, she spends her time making you into a person everyone would consider worthy of her. 

Isabela won’t let anyone else be mean to you either. It’d make her blood boil. While she can’t get mad in front of them, she’s rubbing in their face just how close you are with her, a Madrigal. A long stem of a crimson rose, without thorns, grows from her fingers and curls around your arm once. That’ll likely scare them off.

Fight: How would they feel if their darling fought back?

Very offended. Fighting back would be a very loose term to Isabela, from being late to one of her invitations to struggling when she has you strung up in her vines. In her mind, you should push everything aside for her. She’s above you. Shouldn’t you be honoured to be spending time with her, and then you’re brushing her off? Expect Tsome experimention with her powers. On you. The reality is, she needs you more than you do her. Without you, she has no one to show a different side of herself to. You may have others to return to, but she doesn’t.

Zenith: Would they ever break their darling?

Not on purpose. There’s somewhat of a disconnect in her mind between her behaviour and how it might impact you. Isabela realises it’d be hurtful, but... You’re still coming back, aren’t you? A part of her assumes you enjoy it, even. While raising your voice at her only gets her to tense up further, she melts a bit as soon as you tear up. You’d likely break under the pressure of her trying to control how you act around others and chastising you for it constantly. Her solution to this is just letting you depend on her choosing everything you do for you ❤

Hell: What would be their darling’s worst experience with them?

The way she twists your words and behaviour is a constant source of stress. She’ll take a slight shift in your tone, or a glance to the side, or a nervous habit it and blow it up to a personal attack. She’ll attack you with a barrage of words: You can’t get a single word in. Then, she’ll insist that you make it up to her, or she’ll leave you once and all. Isabela enjoys exerting her power over you, to have you begging for her forgiveness or panicked over the prospect of being left behind. Over time, the acts necessary to make it up to her become more and more extreme. Until they are outright sadistic.

Ideals: What kind of future do they have in mind for/with their darling?

Isabela tries her best not to think about it. Thinking of the future means having to see herself continuing this farce for years to come, and she’d prefer to push that idea from her mind completely. (Then again, despite how she is the one that continues to push it, this disjointed dynamic is not exactly what she wants. But... At this point, going along with your feelings and her own and be her genuine self feels like some kind of defeat. She’s been denying you for so long.)

Quit: If their darling dies, leaves, or successfully escapes, would they ever be able to move on?

To escape Isabela, you’d have to leave the Encanto behind entirely, thread into a world you have never known. It’s the only place she refuses to follow you, and it’d be no small feat. As for her reaction to such an escape, she’d be furious. (And really, a part of her is hurting. If she is herself, then people will leave. That’s the lesson you left her with.) She won’t let people inside her room for ages, since she left it in ruins and can’t be bothered to fix it yet. Mean!Isabela can really only exist prior to the events of the movie. Once she reconciles with her family and her image of herself, she’d... Be able to move on. In fact, she’d feel horrible about the way she treated you, about how twisted her mindset had been. You both pulled out the wost in each other, and the only reason she’d want to see you again is to apologise. 

The events of the movie happening while you’re still around would have an interesting effect on Mean!Isabela though, I think :)
