This film precedes the advent of mainstream feminism, unlike most movies from its time, it manages to avoid being problematic. Chaalbaaz is not afraid to delve deep into the trauma of domestic abuse victims. Sridevi did a fantastic job at breaking gender stereotypes in this movie. Her performance was so iconic that the two male actors of that time played second fiddle to her.
Due to the nature of this movie and the time it was released it wouldn't be wrong to say that Chaalbaaz was way ahead of its time especially in the 80's where male actors dominated the screens.
