To completely avoid the storm I would head to Florida Monday morning. Having no scheduled appearances my agent and publicist would try for a publicity stunt: getting me to sing the national anthem at as many spring training games, major and minor leagues, as possible in 2 days. The wild schedule needed to meet this obligation, complicated by getting some teams to adjust their starting times. would leave me no time for interviews until I prepared for the last of them. That would happen on Tuesday afternoon before the Mets-Nationals game, an interview on the Nationals flagship station with their 2-6 pm show Chad Dukes versus the World. It would air near the end of the show.
Dukes: Welcome back to Chad Dukes versus the World. I have a guest right now joining me live via telephone from West Palm Beach. That would be entertainer Phil Cole who is trying to set a record for most times singing the National Anthem in 2 days. Are you at the record yet, Phil?
PBC: I don’t know. I even lost count of how many I did.
Dukes: You’ve been running all over Florida the last 2 days I understand.
PBC: Yes, and the Red Sox didn’t help much. They don’t even play today.
Dukes: You should have checked the schedule.
PBC: this was improvised. You must have heard there’s snow up north.
Dukes: More than enough here in D.C. too I assure you.
PBC: So I got out of the storm and needed somewhere to perform.
Someone said, “Let’s see how many times you can sing the National Anthem before spring training games.” So here I am.
Dukes: did you run into any objections?
PBC: We improvised. Have you ever seen the National Anthem as a duet?
Dukes: No actually.
PBC: You would have yesterday. We alternated couplets.
Dukes: So how many times did you sing?
PBC: I don’t know. There was a minor league game or 2 and a little league game. We saw some kids warming up and asked if they’d like to hear the anthem. That was great.
Dukes: I understand you’ll be performing after the game tonight.
PBC: Yes, a short performance, some baseball jokes and my more singable hits. I hope the game doesn’t take too long. I’ve got an early flight tomorrow.
Dukes: Where next?
PBC: Chicago, Chicago, never been there before, hope my throat isn’t sore
Dukes: well thanks for joining us. Have a good trip.
PBC: My pleasure.
