#morningwarmupsketch 09/05/20 This week we lost another prominent figure in entertainment/geek culture. Actor, Chadwick Boseman who played Jackie Robinson in 42, James Brown in getting On Up, and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in Marshall. But it is the role of T'Challa in Marvel’s Black Panther that brought him to the level of an international movie star. Little did we know that Black Panther would become a symbol for the black community that showcased a person of color as the lead character in a huge summer franchise, and not just as a sidekick or a caricature of urban street life. Chadwick’s performance conveyed T’Challa as an approachable, practically pious noble whose concern is in the best interest of his kingdom. This is one of the first Marvel films with cultural gravitas that broke across lines of color. This is the Halloween costume that children wanted to buy regardless of their own ethnicity; Hulk really doesn't count because Bruce Banner started out white. The cultural influence has even filtered down to my son who doesn't actively follow the MCU. It was at his suggestion that we use the cross-armed Wakandan salute as a nonverbal signal when he is ready to leave a place or event that has become too overwhelming. Chadwick will be missed, but his legacy will remain as a true hero on and off the screen.
