I discovered Chae Hawk completely by accident...his label Team Radio was hosting a concert dubbed "Team Work" last year in which they request a few local up and comers to perform alongside their own showcased artists in an attempt to give them a great venue and a little notoriety. It certainly worked.. As a guy who prides himself on being in the know as far as what's up and coming in Buffalo NY..the RC cola to Cleveland's Rustbelt Coke I was one pair of Buddy Holly specs away from being a full fledged hipster but completely stunned that I hadn't heard of him before. His energy and presence on stage is comparable to that of watching a playful predator on the discovery channel...like when the adolescent male lions just fuck around with the slowest zebra at the back of the heard by chasing it, pawing at it but intentionally not going for the jugular. there's no mistake that you're in his territory and not the other way around. Emphasis on the playful though..a funny guy but serious when it comes to spitting his word as is evident in the above single "Dinner Plates"..the freshest track off of his sophomore album "Dance Party For The Heavy Hearted"...the heavily remorseful, poetic lyrics coupled with the savage bitterness of a love lost are only made more powerful by the back beat which faintly pays homage to the work of Timbaland and Pharrel's studio work on Jay-Z's "Magna Carter"...Chae is the captain standing at the helm of Buffalo's entire hip hop flagship and I can only hope that given time and exposure it's a ship he can sail into not just local but international waters. Hope you dig it.
