Sonia Sotomayor was born in The Bronx in 1954 to Puerto Rican-born parents. Though her father had a third-grade education, her mother had a nursing degree and felt strongly that school was important. Sonia excelled as a student, holding the role as valedictorian both at her grammar school and high school. She went on to attend Princeton on a full scholarship. Sotomayor is now an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. She has fought passionately on issues of race, gender and ethnic identity. Jacqueline du Pré began playing the cello at age 4, after she heard a cello on the radio and asked her mother for one. When she was 16, she made her formal debut in London. From there she went on to perform in some of the greatest concert halls around the world. When she was only 28, she began a battle with multiple sclerosis, which ended her musical career and ultimately her life. In the short time that she spent sharing her talent with the world, du Pré set an extraordinary bar for all cellists after her. I studied the cello for nearly twelve years, and I listened to her iconic recording of the Elgar Cello Concerto many times as I learned the piece. Rosa Parks grew up on a farm just outside Montgomery Alabama. As a child she would watch as school buses carried white children to school, while she and her fellow black students had to walk. “The bus was among the first ways I realized there was a black world and a white world,” Parks said many years later. Rosa would become a key figure in the civil rights movement, initially as the secretary of the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP, and more famously, for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a bus. There were many others who enacted similar forms of dissent, but Rosa’s story got the country’s attention. She went on to become a legendary science fiction writer, winning the Hugo, Nebula and World Fantasy Awards, each more than once.
