Uttarakhand Avalanche: 14 Rescued, 8 Remain Trapped
Rescue operations continue in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district following a deadly avalanche that trapped 55 workers in the high-altitude village of Mana. As of March 1, 2025, authorities confirmed that 14 more workers have been safely rescued, but eight workers are still trapped under the debris, with efforts hindered by challenging weather conditions.
The avalanche struck the area, where workers from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) were engaged in construction activities. The situation remains critical as rescue teams battle severe weather conditions and difficult terrain to locate and rescue those still trapped.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with local officials and the military deploying additional resources to assist in the effort. Teams equipped with specialized equipment are working tirelessly to reach the trapped workers, but the region’s high-altitude environment and unpredictable weather conditions are proving to be major obstacles.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of workers in such hazardous conditions, especially during winter months when avalanches are more common in the region. Local authorities are also assessing the extent of the damage caused by the avalanche to better understand how to prevent similar accidents in the future.
Updates from officials indicate that while the overall rescue efforts are progressing, the remaining trapped workers' survival depends on the quick action of the rescue teams and favorable weather conditions. The families of those trapped are anxiously waiting for news, while the rescue teams continue their efforts around the clock.
