10 Principles for Change Management
Seasoned business managers know that new growth opportunities cannot succeed with just the inspired efforts of a few who are not really committed. The odds of success are low, because even the brightest ideas cannot be made a reality with half-hearted dedication from staff.
Here is how to approach this problem and to make sure that your change management is implemented successfully.
1. Operational excellence must be the cornerstone of your business
Your core business must be stable and steady and based on high quality products and services. This allows you to help your customer beyond the basic, provides you with funds to support new-growth initiatives and it uncovers other customer needs you may not have known about. As far as possible, distribute both responsibility and opportunities so that both may grow throughout your company.
2. Pursue growth at all levels throughout the company
It doesn’t help that only the CEO or the board of directors of your company is working toward gaining growth. It has to be a combined effort throughout the company with participation from the CEO down through all levels of the company.
3. Work with a few small ideas and not one big idea
Having the culture associated with growing is not enough. There has to be breakthrough ideas that are put into practice while bad ideas are dismissed before they consume significant time. Make sure the people involved in making these decisions are close enough to know all the facts, but removed far enough to not have a clouded judgement.
4. Make your resources Customer and Business Innovation instead of Product and Technology Innovation
Growth is often among the top 3 priorities of CEOs, but hardly any of them spend time on nurturing new forms of growth. The reason for that is simple – new growth is difficult. Most new-growth businesses need people and assets that are different to the core business in an important way. Let your company expand from its core commodity into related areas and see your authority on various products grow.
5. Suit the needs of the new business just as much as the needs of the core business.
New generation opportunities are very often different from the core business in terms of economics, capital structures and methods of capturing value. Make sure you incorporate these differences into your business and that your business is structured and organised in the most effective manner.
6. Catalyze growth through selective acquisitions and alliances
It is important to understand that new-growth opportunities cannot always be pursued with home-grown resources. Sometimes staff structures need to be shifted around, responsibility increased or decreased and hard assets need to be used when possible.
7. Don’t “sell” change
Don’t use the change as a way of moving along agreements or implementations, it’s not a sustainable strategy. Make sure you understand and can manage the change in a way that people can handle and cope with. Don’t make it too unsettling and check in with staff members who are affected by the change to see if they are managing.
8. Don’t rush it
New-growth opportunities have a big impact on how business is done and these should be planned properly and with proper input from experienced CEOs or consultation firms. Nothing can be more disastrous than untied ends after a new product launch and it will shake the trust of your loyal customers too.
9. Measure efficiently
Before even talking about implementing change, make sure you know where your business is currently. Know your capability, your product range, your staff structure, etc. It doesn’t help that you plan change for your business, but you don’t know what’s going on in it right now. Make sure your plans for change are realistic compared to where you are now.
10. Offer proper training on the change in your company
Make sure that staff members are trained on any new procedures to follow or new product launches. Your staff members are the arms of your business and if they function inefficiently it can lead to many various problems regarding your company’s change management.
Change management is often a huge undertaking and can appear to be a daunting experience. Make sure you make use of the above tips to help you achieve a successful change management for your business.

It takes some guts–and some imagination–to spot trends and leverage them to your advantage, but smart workers always keep one eye on the future. No one wants to be the guy building a buggy next to the Ford plant.
