...Vivaldi’s avian landscape is constructed on more than mimesis. The whole ensemble unexpectedly drops out apart from the three violins. With the sudden lack of a ‘bottom’, our ears shoot ‘upwards’. In other words, the violinists aren’t pretending to be birds to us or to each other; instead, we the listeners have become birds and suddenly find ourselves in the treetops amongst others just like us. Vivaldi creates a soundworld in which the listeners move about…
