Eight-piece pop acts are few and far between, but Chantoozies managed to pull it off, combining what was essentially a girl group (made up of former and current soap actresses) with a “real band” and becoming an iconic, if short lived, part of Australia’s eighties pop scene. The debut Chantoozies single ‘Witch Queen’ was a top five hit, and while it was a fun cover, it could have easily been a fluke - and when follow-up ‘He’s Gonna Step On You Again’ peaked outside the top twenty, it seemed like that might be the case.

‘Wanna Be Up’, however, turned their fortunes around, and rightfully so - while not as obvious or instant as ‘Witch Queen’, or their later cover of ‘Love The One You’re With’, the single was a much better indicator of the band’s potential. For a group whose origins didn’t exactly scream credibility, ‘Wanna Be Up’ was a well written, well sung offering that reveals its charms with repeated listens. That slow burn was reflected in its chart run, as the single dipped in and out of the top ten across a period of several months.

The song hinted toward a prosperous future for Chantoozies, but it didn’t materialise - the aforementioned ‘Love The One You’re With’ was a decent success for them in 1991, but most of their other singles were minor hits at best, and they had disbanded by ‘92. The female half of Chantoozies would eventually reform and tour, with the group still held in high regard by Australian pop nerds and eighties enthusiasts - and if one song lifted them to this status, allowing them to remain active after thirty years, it’s ‘Wanna Be Up’.
