The TodoFam in BNHA Vol. 2 Chap. 010 - Breaking Bakugō (折れろ爆豪 Orero Bakugō)

Let’s look at what the manga shows us first:
Todoroki Shōto ‘Mekura mashi o kaneta bakuha de kidō henkō, soshite, sokuza ni mō ikkai… Kangaeru TYPE ni wa mienee ga, igaito sensai da na.’
轟焦凍「目眩ましを兼ねた爆破で軌道変更、そして、即座にもう一回…考えるタイプには見えねぇが、意外と繊細だな。」
Todoroki Shōto “He changed the trajectory with an explosion that also served as a blinding blow, and then he did it again instantly… He doesn’t seem like the type to think things through, but he’s surprisingly sensitive.” [Chap 10]
Observation notes:
Shōto appears solely in two panels, the most interesting one being the first in which he analyzes Bakugō’s way to fight, proving he had a good analysis ability (along with Yaoyorozu who will turn out to be the other recommended student along with Shōto).
Also worth to be pointed out is how all the students, Shōto included, are made to witness a fight All Might should have stopped long ago but insisted in letting it continue because, according to him, it would be beneficial for Midoriya. It’s a pattern in the story, the teachers would have the responsibility to stop the students but won’t do it or will wait a lot before doing it.
This is maybe the only social critique of sort Horikoshi put in his story, as his message seems to say that in real life teachers have the duty to stop the students before they were to hurt themselves but they really shouldn’t do it because it could be beneficial to them (and who cares if they get seriously hurt as long as they don’t die). Sadly, as far as I am concerned, it’s not a particularly inspiring critique, as I find ludicrous the idea that it’s okay to let teenagers break their bones if this help them sort their feelings.
Teaching notes:
At this point All Might should absolutely stop the fight so as not to leave them in a building so seriously damaged it is a dangerous place to stay and All Might himself know but no, he let them continue. It turns out he has to explains now what he should have taught them before starting this exercise and telling them to go all out, that destroying the building is not a good idea because they will lose points for it. As the exercise continue, again Bakugō and Midoriya as well do something dangerous and All Might can’t stop them. The result is further destruction of the building that could have killed them all if it weren’t a manga and Midoriya breaking his arm. Really, I get All Might is an inexperienced teacher but watching him here is an exercise in watching what not to do as a teacher. The main problem though is that the story doesn’t criticize him, no, it actually agrees both Bakugō and Midoriya needed that.
English version notes:
The English version messed up big time here as it gave Shōto’s sentence “He doesn’t seem like a thinker, but that strategy was fairly intricate.” to Yaoyorozu and completely cut her own. “Getting in a clean hit while fighting against inertia requires fine lateral adjustments to the power of the explosions.” This damages both characters as they end up talking and explaining a lot less.
Now, regarding the anime version...
Episode 7 - Deku vs. Kacchan (デクＶＳかっちゃん DEKU VS Katchan)
Changed parts notes:
In the anime, when Shōto should comment the battle, they have him squeeze his eyes and then say only:
Todoroki Shōto “Kangaeru TYPE ni wa mienee ga, igaito sensai da na.’
轟焦凍「考えるタイプには見えねぇが、意外と繊細だな。」
Todoroki Shōto “He doesn’t seem like the type to think things through, but he’s surprisingly sensitive.”
It’s only when Kirishima asks him what he means that Shōto will explain.
Todoroki Shōto “Mekura mashi o kaneta bakuha de kidō henkō, soshite, sokuza ni mō ikkai.’
轟焦凍「目眩ましを兼ねた爆破で軌道変更、そして、即座にもう一回。」
Todoroki Shōto “He changed the trajectory with an explosion that also serves as a blinding blow, and then he did it again instantly.”
This allows the discussion to flow better but also makes clear Shōto noticed something not everyone could notice as Kirishima asked him for explanations.
Other changes are that Shōto is shown (albeith he remains silent) when the students complained about what Bakugō was doing, that the scene in which the students, among which Shōto, were shown as they watched Bakugō and Midoriya fight but that shows Shōto among the students again when Team Hero is declared the winner.
