Observation notes:
Shōto immediately attacks, trying to repeat in a more controlled manner what he had done with Sero... sort of as this time his attack would have encased in ice the whole of Bakugō, head too, which would have soon killed him, had not Bakugō broken the ice moving toward him and started digging into it with his explosions... and when he emerges he explodes the last bits of ice who, conveniently, do not hit Shōto, who tries to attack him with ice again, but, before he can do so, Bakugō moves away, grabs Shōto and sends him flying, attempting to toss him out of the ring.
Shōto uses his ice to stop himself from falling out of bonds. Bakugō jumps on him but Shōto grabs his arm, deviating his attack. He could now use his fire to attack Bakugō, Enji encourages him to do so, but Shōto only tosses Bakugō away.
Aizawa points out how Bakugō did allow for Shōto to grab him, as he wanted to test him, and observes how instead Shōto has lost his drive.
Meanwhile Bakugō is angry because Shōto did not use his fire, thinking he is being undervalued, while Shōto’s body is slowly covering in ice as he has used his ice Quirk too much apparently.
It is worth to mention Bakugō absolutely loathes being undervalued, people might remember how poorly he took it when he thought Midoriya hid from him the fact he had a Quirk and was deliberately refusing to use it against him because he was looking down at him.
Seeing how things are turning out, Midoriya encourages Shōto to fight, which prompts a reaction from him as he uses his fire to defrost himself.
Honestly Shōto setting his whole face on fire without receiving the slightest damage makes even harder to believe how Rei could burn him with just some boiling water anyway after he defrost himsef he... remembers about his mother being scared at the sight of him and about him telling his father he has forgotten about him and... he snuffs his flames as Bakugō’s attack hits him. This leads him to end up out of bonds and unconscious.
Bakugō grabs him, telling him to stop messing around and that he can’t win like this, threatening to attack him even though he is unconscious but Midnight knocks him down with her Quirk. Only now Midnight declares his win.
And this is where the chapter ends.
Retcon notes:
It is worth to mention that, except for a glimpse in which Enji encourages Shōto to use his Quirk, Horikoshi completely ignores him. He do not comments on the fight, he will not confront Shōto about it, it is just as if Horikoshi do not know anymore what to do with him, how he should depict him react to his son’s actions and, in fact, for a long while, Horikoshi will ignore their interaction, with the glimpse we see in the Stain arc not really matching with what we see here.
It is meaningful “School Briefs” will depict an Enji who has different feelings than this one at watching his son’s performance (Enji is afraid he might be exchanged for a doting father) and that the Enji we will see at the remedial course acts in a way that is completely different from this Enji even if he had not started his atonement arc yet.
Basically Horikoshi will try HARD to retcon the Enji we saw here, which might have been a spur of the moment decision since prototype Enji was meant to be different and to have a different relation with prototype Shōto. We probably will never know.
Teaching notes:
So in the manga is not very clear (we see it better in the anime) but the idea is that Shōto wanted to do the same thing he did with Sero, this time if Bakugō had not managed to break the ice he would have been completely encased in ice... and when I mean completely I mean his head too. Bakugō would not have been able to breath, which would have killed him and... nobody cares.
Also Aizawa noticed how Shōto had lost his drive after his fight with Midoriya, he should have known about his problems with fire but not him or any other teacher will try to help Shōto out of this later. Later All Might will point it out to Shōto but still will not do anything... because Shōto can handle it on his own. After all it is not like teachers exist to help students.
Also, when Bakugō yells at an unconscious Shōto, threatening to attack him, instead than telling him to stop, Midnight just knocks him down with her Quirk. Because why talking with him when you can just knock him down? Never mentioning even though Bakugō was angry and threatening the unconscious Shōto, he was not actually attacking him.
There really was no need to knock him down but here U.A. do not control the situation with rules, they handle these kids like Villains who need to be restrained.
And what was Midnight waiting for to give the win to Bakugō? For him to get angry? Or she did not do it because she was afraid of him to get angry if he was awake? Honestly this is handle in a horrible way.
Translation notes:
Bakugō calls Shōto ‘Name PU no KUSO KASU’ (舐めプのクソカス). ‘Name PU’ (舐めプ) means “mocking/not taking the opponent seriously” while ‘KUSO KASU’ (クソカス) means literally means “shitty trash” and practically means “the worst kind of scum”. This expression is used to refer to a despicable person who insults or belittles their opponent without taking them seriously and is an expression of anger mainly used in games, sports, and competitive situations when the opponent isn't playing seriously.
Episode 25 - Todoroki vs. Bakugō (轟VS爆豪, Todoroki VERSUS Bakugō)
As said previously, this episode places together the previous chapter and this one, so, in order to smoother things and not repeat them twice it mixes them a little. This means some scenes we see were actually in the following chapter but were placed before some scenes that are in this chapter therefore I will count them as changed (as they changed the position in which they were presented) instead than deleted.
Added parts notes:
The anime shows a close up of Enji watching Shōto’s first attack.
The anime has Mineta wonder what that sound is and Asui guessing it is Bakugō, using his explosions to break the ice.
The anime adds Shōto jumping away when Bakugō finishes breaking the ice and emerges from it so then it needed to add Shōto running at him and Bakugō propelling himself toward Shōto using his explosions, as the latter needed to be close enough for Bakugō to grab him. However this causes the anime to have to add Bakugō using his explosion to move to the side to avoid being hit/touched by Shōto when they are close when in the manga he used them to propel himself out of the hole he dug and toward Shōto, making less believable how he managed to grab Shōto and toss him away.
The anime expands the sentence Enji says so now it is
Todoroki Enji ‘Hidari o tsukae! Tsukae Shōto!’ 轟炎司「左を使え!使え焦凍!」 Todoroki Enji “Use your left hand! Use it, Shōto!”
The anime also expands what Bakugō says after Shōto tossed him away.
Bakugō Katsuki ‘Zaken janē, ore jā chikarabusoku ka yo.’ 爆豪勝己「ざけんじゃねぇ、俺じゃあ力不足かよ」 Bakugō Katsuki “Don't mess with me, am I not strong enough?”
After Midoriya calls Shōto the anime adds Shōto saying Midoriya’s name.
The anime adds Shōto raising his arm toward Bakugō, ready to hit him with his fire, only to lower it when the memories hit him. By the way now there are also more memories.
There is another addition to what Bakugō says after Shōto passed out without using his fire.
Bakugō Katsuki ‘(HiI keshi ya gatta.)…… Ha? Ha? OI-… fu-… fuzakenna yo!! Imi nētteittendarouga KUSO ga!! Konna 1-i nante! Konna no! Kon-…’ 爆豪勝己「(火ィ消しやがった。)……は?は?おいっ…ふっ…ふざけんなよ!!意味ねぇって言ってんだろうがクソが!!こんな1位なんて!こんなの!こんっ…」 Bakugō Katsuki “(He put out the fire.) ...Huh? Huh? Hey... Ha... Don't mess with me!! I'm telling you it's meaningless, you bastard!! This kind of first place is just ridiculous! This is! This is...”
Changed parts notes:
At the start of this chapter in the manga we seethe people watching Shōto and Bakugō from some screens. To make things look smoother in the anime this scene was placed before.
The anime makes clear how Bakugō fought Shōto’s first attack, visually showing how he answered to it.
In the anime the whole of Midoriya’s sentence is spoken out loud while in the manga it seemed part of it was merely thought.
In the manga the ones commenting on what Bakugō did seem to be random viewers while the anime makes them be Sero and Kaminari.
In the anime the whole of Bakugō’s sentence about Shōto’s Quirk is spoken out loud while in the manga it seemed part of it was merely thought.
Now, in the manga Shōto needs to touch a surface to start to ice it, even if then he could then spread his ice at will, in this scene of the anime though, he tosses his ice at the surface, and that start to ice it.
The anime makes more clear Shōto was going to concede the match earlier by having him lower his hand, only to stop doing so when Midoriya called him.
In the anime Bakugō seems happy Midoriya encouraged Shōto to fight but I do not get the same feeling from the manga.
The anime better shows how Shōto is warning up before using his fire Quirk as the ice on him starts to melt/evaporate.
Extra notes:
The scene of Shōto freezing and unfreezing the place was included in the scenes that took part to the ultimate scene ranking.
