Under these Circumstances - Forty-Nine
It was a frigid memory. Something cold and nostalgic, a memory paved with a snowy white path and cloaked in darkness.
The dark-haired fox was soliciting around a broken down village, followed hesitantly by low-level followers. Granted, the fox was of great importance, but his vice greatly overpowered any of his virte.
He sighed in boredom, watching the remaining population of the village struggle with idle life. He couldn’t help but scoff, raising an eyebrow with a small laugh. “So, explain why I’m here again?”
A messenger nodded. “Inari-sama wants to keep watch on this village, Akira-dono. The residents, or the remaining ones, are loyal worshippers, therefore deserve at least this much menial assistance,” he explained, looking around the remnants of shacks and buildings, followed by burial after burial.
Akira nodded with a yawn, pacing near an abandoned shack. “All I smell are corpses, they’re overpopulating any living flesh around here…” he commented, kicking at a broken door. “Whoever did this was in quite a bad mood…”
“There were claims of an Evil King of some sorts, I am not certain,” the messenger replied.
“An Evil King?” Akira repeated, laughing darkly. “Sounds like something a child would say. You’re saying that a single demon did this to an entire village?”
“That is correct, he must be indeed strong.”
Akira kicked at more rubble, stretching absently. “Strong? Or just an idiot? There are differences,” he pointed out. “Any simple-minded creature could cause this much damage if you think about it. Really, it just depends on the size of the demon or its weapon. Now, if it wasn’t some simple-minded creature, think of the possibilities. A village like this, it’s easier to come from the left side, that’s where the weakest protection seems to be. So a demon would sneak in from there, and kill anyone who saw them first, and move on to the sleeping targets. However, if he was interested in the brothels, then he’d need to have decent enough form to resemble a human, get in there, have some fun, and start there, where everyone’s seen him,” he went on, pacing around the village with a smile on his face and observing the destruction. “I’d say, from this destruction, the Evi King has some intelligence, merged with a bloodthirsty streak. Though, looks as he advanced, something was stopping him.”
The fox went on, not even paying mind to humans as he walked through the village, oblivious to his surroundings as he continued to observe the Evil King’s methods, a certain skip in his step.
The only thing that caught Akira’s interest was an increase of miasma. Turning around, he looked at the messengers following him, giving a shrug. “Go check out the source of that miasma. If you don’t come back, I know who it i—“
A thrashing, heavy pain suddenly took place on the left side of his face.
And near this side…
My head hurts…
This village girl, trapped under piles of wood struggled just to rub her forehead of dirt, giving a silent groan. She remembered little of what had just happened, only that if she opened her eyes, there’d be an awful sight ahead of her.
Did that demon leave already?
The girl couldn’t be sure, she heard voices, muffled voices, but they were distinct. The same taunting screaming from earlier, and another’s voice. The girl could only hear something, like a heavy object falling to the ground, but couldn’t make out what was really going on.
I don’t want to know…
Just a few feet away
The hollow feeling on the left side of Akira’s face left him at a loss for words. The loud thumping in his head wouldn’t leave, and pulsated in his left eye. Which, speaking of that left eye…
Unlike most would, Akira wasn’t covering the pained area with his hand. So where was that darkness coming from? Both his eyes were wide open, staring at a demon with a contorted smile on his face and slinging some club-like weapon around. The right of him was crystal clear, yet the left saw nothing.
This cocky bastard…
The Evil King laughed loudly, turning his back away from Akira. “You’re not that village girl I saw earlier, but hell, that was amusing,” he commented. “Then again, if you can’t even see the next fatal shot, there’s no point in wasting my energy~. Maybe next time.”
And so, in the present…
The bitter memory engraved itself into Akira’s mind. Even now, sitting at a desk in school, mingling with humans as if it were natural, that memory managed to drive him mad. Granted, he’d been right. Laying under a pile of wood for safety was a human girl with fiery hair.
His right eye rested on Arika carefully. Of all parts of the memory, the mending of his wound from an overly grateful girl was foggy and fragmented. A smiling and warm face was all he remembered.
I’d gotten in trouble after that. Allegedly spending my time with some girl over taking out the Evil King when he was right in front of me, viewed as neglect and disobeying rules from a god. I was too distracted by that damned Evil King to care.
On the subject of it, he had no luck ever tracking the demon down after that. Anyone he asked had no knowledge whatsoever. The only thing they knew was of his ally, the wild fox, Tomoe. Meanwhile, after news of Akura-Ou’s death, there wasn’t much to go by except for his allies.
Arika had once asked what the sense in taking it out on Akura-Ou’s comrades was, but Akira had only ignored her.
Speaking of said ally…
Distant
Thunk.
The heavy club rested upwards in the snow, a demon with a large smile on his face laughing obnoxiously. “You should’ve been there!” he cried in mockery, looking up at a white-haired fox. “It was a rush. A huge rush. If I could have stayed longer, I would.”
“…”
Akura-Ou’s smile faltered in the presence of his comrade’s disengaged expression the fox could be such a grim ayakashi. “Something wrong there, Tomoe?” Akura-Ou asked, raising an eyebrow with a snicker.
“I just find it hard to believe you find something like that fun. I don’t see the point in attacking people who’ve done nothing to me first,” the fox stated. He gave a scoff, noticing the blood on Akura-Ou’s weapon. “I wouldn’t have joined even if I was there.”
Laughing sardonically, Akura-Ou shrugged. “Suit yourself, but you’re missing out.”
“I’ll survive, so what stopped you in the first place?”
The amused expression on Akura-Ou’s face widened. “Some messenger was around the area. After giving him a pretty decent thrashing I decided not to push my luck any further.”
Tomoe blinked, gving a small smile. “So you antagonised a fox?” he asked, giving a snort.
“Don’t see why not.”
“Foxes hold grudges, Akura-Ou, and they’ll carry them to their grave if they must,” Tomoe explained sternly. “You’re making a lot of vermin your enemy.”
“Look who’s talking.” The demon, the “Evil King” as others called him, rolled his eyes at the advice. “You speak of ‘em as if you don’t even relate to your own kind. That’s pretty cold of you.”
Tomoe grimaced for a slight second. “I’d rather not spend my days harvesting rice and catering to the needs of humans. Just as you shouldn’t be wasting your time with messengers. It’s a waste of time.”
“I’m not dying anytime soon, so I can waste some time,” Akura-Ou dismissed, giving a shrug.
“Did you happen to catch the messenger’s name?” Tomoe asked.
Akura-Ou sighed loudly. “From what I heard it was Akira or something… not that it matters, that village’s isn’t the only thing that has a weakness on the left side.”
