💍’ from Peggy Carter to Steve
Steve Rogers prided himself on being difficult to surprise. After everything he'd lived through, the war, the ice, aliens, gods, and time itself, very little still managed to catch him off guard.
The first thing he became aware of was the pounding behind his eyes. That alone was unusual. It took him a moment to remember why. Thor's victory celebration.
Someone, almost certainly Stark, had insisted they finally settle the age-old question of whether Captain America could actually get drunk. Thor, more than happy to contribute to the experiment, had produced a bottle of Asgardian mead with a grin that should've served as a warning to everyone involved. Steve vaguely remembered saying it was a bad idea. Turns out he'd been right.
He blinked against the morning light filtering through the curtains, only to realize he wasn't alone. Turning his head, he froze.
"...Peggy?" She was still asleep beside him, looking far more peaceful than he felt.
His brow furrowed as he tried to piece together the previous night. There had been music. Dancing. Laughter. Thor making increasingly dramatic toasts. At some point Clint had started taking bets on... something.
After that? Nothing. Slowly, Steve pushed himself upright, rubbing a hand over his face. That's when something caught his eye.
A simple gold band encircled the ring finger of his left hand. "...No."
His gaze immediately shifted to Peggy's hand. She was wearing one too.
For a long moment, he simply stared before noticing an official-looking document resting on the nightstand between them.
He reached over, picked it up, and read the heading.
Steve let out a long, slow breath, letting the paper fall back onto the nightstand.
Another moment passed before the corner of his mouth twitched despite himself. "I have a feeling Stark's going to be insufferable when he finds out."
