Ice skating, on the surface, looked easy. Everyone complained about how long it took them to strap on their ice skates, but Pietro took about 0.23 seconds to work out how to do his and then Kitty’s, and then they were off before long too. It was just when he stepped foot onto the ice that everything went horribly wrong. There had been times in training that Pietro had embarrassed himself, but this was a new level. He was on the ice, nursing an aching back, before Kitty could even step on behind him. Then he tried to get up with super-speed so she didn’t notice and ended up just crashing into the wall around the rink, leaving a nice little dent in it that he hoped the employees wouldn’t notice for a while – at least until their hour was up, anyway.
“Any tips?” Pietro asked her, moving forward a little on the ice and feeling his feet almost go out from under him again. He grabbed onto Kitty’s arm, flipping off the couple that passed them, muttering under their breath about Pietro ‘interrupting the flow’ or whatever the shit that meant. “Okay, bad choice. This was a bad choice. I’m going to die today, Kitty. You have to explain to my sister why I died, you know that, right?”
When Orse said he wanted to hold a mini Panel conference in Avengers Tower, Tony had no issue with providing him with the penthouse for an afternoon. He had no issue telling JARVIS to cover security, ordering FRIDAY to investigate each member to find out their preferences for food and alcohol, telling Fee to cancel his other appointments for that day because of course when he signed he agreed that the Accords would come first over everything, even other CEOs, even buyers, even family. He had agreed to that. He had signed a contract for that.
What Tony did have an issue with was the suspicious lack of invite. How when the Panel had arrived in his home - in his penthouse, for Christ’s sake - they had spent all of two minutes humouring him with a handshake and a general inquiry into his health (“Yes, it’s still shit, yes, my heart’s hanging on by a thread, yes, I’m in the brink of cardiac arrest, thank you.”) and then so graciously told him he was uninvited.
"It’s not personal, Stark.” That’s what they’d all said.
It kind of felt personal. Then again, everything did nowadays.
So there he was, dressed in his best Tom Ford three piece suit (2017 edition, because his PA shared his taste in fine clothing) tapping his fingers against his desk because of course they’d turn off surveillance in the room. It wasn’t that he was nosy it was just … He deserved to know. It was his tower, after all.
Unless he hacked his own security system …
When Pryde phased through the floor as she was prone to do, Tony almost kissed her. “Just the girl I need,” he said. “I got locked out of my own conference. It wasn’t personal apparently, but I need to know what they’re saying about me. About us.” He slid a Stark pad over to her. “Help me out?”
Bed rest, as a whole, sucked. Pietro knew it probably more than the next guy, having spent months in the hospital after Sokovia. Still, for some reason, when it was Kitty who couldn’t do the things she normally did, it was worse than Pietro being confined to a small room, driving himself insane. They were both more than a little bruised even now, but as New York passed from one phase of the war to another, aliens lingering in the distance, there was a brief moment of tense peace.
Of course, it was in this interval that Pietro decided the best time to have any kind of talk with Kitty – the kind MJ had recommended, the kind that made him break out in a nervous sweat when he even thought about it – was over ice cream in Central Park. “At least we don’t have to worry about getting stabbed anymore,” Pietro said, a weak grin coming onto his face as he took a bite out of his ice cream. It was more than a little suspicious that when Orse fell, the Syndicate disappeared, but he supposed the world was a suspicious place. He didn’t really care. He was alive, and his sister was alive, and Clint and MJ and Kitty were alive. All good things, as far as he was concerned.
“Aliens aren’t really new to you, are they?” He remembered her telling him about going to space. It was where she found Lockheed, after all. “How screwed are we? Wait, do I want to know, or should I just grab one of those paper bags and move to Pluto right now? We could start our own colony!”

“Thanks for coming, Kitty,” Sue said with a warm smile, leaning her elbows against the counter, pushing a mug of cocoa towards her friend. “It’s a very serious matter I have to discuss with you today, and I can sum it up in two words: mistaken identity. Or mistaken abilities, as it turns out.”
Normally, Sue would invite Kitty around to her apartment, they would watch Netflix with a few glasses of wine until they fell asleep, and they’d wake up the next morning suddenly realising they had students waiting on a test to be given out, and others begging for the grade. Such were the lives of educators, a strained and precious thing. Tonight, though, the Baxter building was her venue of choice. The sky was going to look amazing tonight, a comet would streak across it sometime in the early morning, and she was determined to capture it on tape this year. Last year, Galactus had very rudely interrupted her plans. Such were the lives of super-heroes, she thought to herself with a smile.
“I feel like we should put out some kind of infomercial, or a public safety announcement on our behalf,” Sue began, so the course of action was clearly laid out before the problem was even addressed. “I have now had three people - three, Kitty - who have thrown something at me and been almost offended when I inform them that no, I cannot make myself intangible. I have a bruise in the shape of Australia right now. Something’s gotta change.”
The Panel overhaul had been long overdue, and now that it had occurred, Tony could at least feel a little content. That particular argument was now drawing to a close. Things were looking up, and more and more heroes were stepping forward and signing their name on the dotted line. The countries that had established the Accords in the first place were content, and the heroes that helped to protect the city and the world with it were now free to do so without worrying about being arrested or thrown into the Raft. Just another benefit to the whole situation was how Tony’s guilt regarding Kitty’s registration had somewhat alleviated itself. (He still hated how he handled the whole thing, and probably always would.)
In an attempt to get back to where they once had been, Tony invited Kitty around to see the most recent armor he’d been working on. She would enjoy the rocket boosters Lila Rhodes had worked on. They were strong enough that they could lift Tony into the earth’s orbit if he wanted to go there.
Above him, FRIDAY gave the gentle warning that Kitty was on her way down to the workshop. Tony ran his hands through his hair, sweeping a few of the empty bottles on his workbench into the waste bin, wincing at the smash. The second Kitty stepped into the workshop, Dum-E rolled over and pushed his claw towards her, clicking a little in greeting.
Tony raised his hand in an awkward wave. “Long time no see, stranger,” he said, though the joke fell somewhat flat. “I, um, I’ve been working on a space suit in case this whole thing goes sub-orbital. Thought you might be interested in seeing it.”
