Character Analysis V: Tim Shepard in Love
A/N: Timothy Shepard is my favorite character! Dream guy, who?
—–
First, what is Tim’s home life like? How did he grow up? Tim has taken care of his siblings most of his life with dysfunctional parents and a step-father disconnect. I believe Tim’s father is absent, whether he died or not I’m not sure.
As a child he forced to grow up quickly, and while he received affection as a young child, that went away when Curly and Angela were born.
At home he is always on edge, combative. If he shows his siblings affection, or does something not necessary that’s pleasant, it’s mostly because he knows they need it.
What kind of woman would it be?
Tim has a somewhat healthy way in relieving stress by managing a gang. It helps him achieve control, but also accept that he can’t control everything (in certain situations, Tim doesn’t have control and he still faces repercussions). It’s also not extremely risky, compared to Dally’s mechanisms, anyway.
He also blows off steam in fights and sex, occasional drinking and smoking, but also in caring for his siblings (not always a coping mechanism).
For a woman to love Tim, they’d have to accept his drinking and smoking. Neither of which are too excessive, though they can lean that way sometimes. They’d also have to be independent. Tim isn’t very affectionate, he wasn’t shown much affection and he’s seen and dealt with enough to be permanently tough.
Tim has a tendency to either forcibly confront problems or ignore them in a relationship, so a partner can’t be too sensitive in that way.
They need to have a strong, unrelenting will and the audacity to boldly state their opinions. Tim is used to people doing as he says, whether it’s his siblings, his gang (he’s the leader), his parents, or strangers/people due to his tough, intimidating exterior.
You wouldn’t have to put up with Tim’s crap if you just told him. He won’t walk on you if he’s set in place. He doesn’t even purposefully do it.
What type of woman would it be?
Typically an intelligent middle class good girl, who doesn’t mind certain things like smoking weed, minor crimes, etc. A laidback, ambitious girl that’s honest and rational.
She would be rather introverted, and truthfully he’d have to initiate things because this girl wouldn’t associate with greasers or guys like him.
How he’d act?
Tim doesn’t struggle displaying affection, it’s the verbal affection he struggles with. So, when he’s in love he will kiss his girlfriend hello, goodbye, give her little pecks, etc. He is capable of acting like a teenage boy and will.
He’s open for very deep conversation, as long as it’s at an appropriate time. He loves someone genuinely listening to him when he talks, sharing his complex ideas to someone who will actually understand and not just act like they do or agree with him.
He’s still very independent and calculating with a tendency to act suddenly or on his own, but he’ll always apologize when he’s fucked up bad.
Example
1. On a internship, she is stuck taking care of one of Tim’s boys in the ER. Only, it’s been three times in the last week and these damn boys need to be smarter. But their unrelenting leader isn’t that bad, she can’t exactly avoid him when he asks for her by name, knowing well that they’ll listen.
2. Tim’s friend has a sister who’s trying real hard at Soc dress up ever since making a new close friend. Tim’s riding in the car when his friend stops to crash a party his sister is at, taking OC along with them because her car conveniently died. No one wants to be stuck in this car.
After finding out where OC works, Tim decides him and Curly need breakfast the next morning.
3. This is the third time her friend has bought weed from Tim Shepard while she watched from afar. The house is empty, her friend says he and his buddies can hang and smoke if they’re down.
OC is rather uncomfortable and calls her boyfriend out of boredom, who realizes she’s high and gets angry with her.
4. She works at the car garage Tim is lifting parts for. He’s so hungry for work he’s supplying practically every part. He never goes away, and always comes when she’s there.
One night, she needs something very specific so he takes her with him to show her how part lifting is truly done.
Developing a realistic OC
- Don’t make her related to the Curtises. Please, just don’t do it.
- Don’t make her either a prude or a drunk. Every Tim fic I’ve ever read has the OC get drunk with Tim, or he persuades her to drink because she’s “too good”.
- Any girl that would date a guy like Tim Shepard has to be strong-willed. The kind of girl to date Soda is not the kind of girl to date Tim.
- Don’t pull the “River King’s sister” or “Brumly boy’s leader’s ex”, like, just don’t.
Overall Summary
Tim is highly capable of love with a very specific type. He needs a witty, defiant, and strong-willed girl to keep him in line when his bad habits get out of hand. He has a tendency to take control or ice people out, so she wouldn't stand for that.
While she could be a greaser, the girl would have to have lots of ambition, very smart and likely going to college.
