Featured Avatar: Kansas - As Always, you can ask about her on the State of Disunion Ask/Sketch blog
Kansas is a self reliant, loner state with occasional moments of sunshine erupting between longer periods of bitterness and wishing to be left alone
Kansas started her existence as an optimistic state full of frontier vigor and eagerness to prove herself.
And then she found herself an unwilling pawn in the slavery dispute and the unofficial first battle ground of the Civil War and decided she preferred being left alone.
Kansas stays on her farm most of the time and prefer the company of her animals and the business of her farm work than dealing with other state and the problems. She has even been known to chase a few away if she is in a particularly bad mood, but she later regrets feeding the stereotype of the backwards homicidal horror movie farmer.
She isn’t actually mean spirited, but the Civil War left her irritable with most of the Southern and Northern states. She doe snot trust them and does not like them coming around to her lands unless their intentions are very above ground and in now way involved telling her what she should be doing. She developed a severe dislike of being told what she should do or think. Now she will deny the sky is blue if she feels like another state is telling her she SHOULD see the sky as blue.
This is actually why she holds onto to creationism is so much. She is actually not the most fundamentalist of state’s, but she feels the other state’s are telling her what she must do and what she must accept and she has dug her heels in and wildly refused to do what they are telling her to. If she were left alone for about 50 years she probably would stop, but no one leaves her alone.
Despite her easily ruffled feathers she does have friends. She is close with Nebraska as they share a lot in common in term sof interests and work ethics, and she is very close with Missouri, despite the bitter history between their peoples.
Her friendship with Missouri surprises some avatars who don’t know her well because her creationism stance leads many to assume she would take issue with Missouri being non-binary. However, she see that as them making their own choices and not allowing themselves to be told what gender they must be. And on the religious aspect, she figures if god made humans in his image, and he is infinite, why would everyone be confined by a finite binary. This gets her into arguments with more fundamental state’s then herself (Indiana especially).
By extension of her friendship with Missouri, she sees Iowa and Ohio socially, but neither of them are allowed to show up unexpectedly at her home. Only Nebraska and Missouri can.
She has also been known to punch state’s out who make jokes about her lands being flat and/or ugly-boring. After getting walloped, any state that made the joke will be dragged out to see her Sunflower fields and sit their until the agree she is not an ugly, flat state.
She is very good at carpentry and repairs; she has to be given the regular tornado damage she suffers. However, it has become a hobby and she is very good at wood working. She also assists other Tornado stricken states with repairs and is actually very cheerful and supportive about it.
She has also chosen to embrace the awesome devastation of Tornadoes and is now very involved in Storm Chasing, the thing most likely to get her off her farm.
One even she is *very* proud of is her balloon festival. She invites everyone over so they can enjoy the marvelous site and the state’s look forward to it each year.
The also look forward to the beautiful Sunflower wreaths she sends everyone each fall.
So there are some things on State of Disunion’s Kansas!
