(Please read the whole thing. I'm not being rude or calling out anymore in the fandom. I just wanted to post this cause I've had this in my drafts since March and I think I made some good points here)
WHAT'S THIS FANDOM'S ISSUE WITH REDEMPTION?
Now that the title has grabbed your attention, I do want to talk about the TSAMS fandom and the odd thing I've noticed.
Now, this isn't me accusing anyone of anything, but this is just something that I've noticed that is just kind of ticking me off.
Now, everyone can have their own opinions of characters. I'm not trying to convince anyone to like this character or hate another. That's not what I'm trying to do, but I gotta ask...
What's this fandom's issue with redemption?
For a show that involves a lot of redemption, the fandom seems to have an issue with certain characters getting redeemed or trying to change.
For example, Monty and Moon. Yeah, I won't lie, Monty and Moon have done some f*cked up $hit. I'm not trying to make excuses for their actions. Moon was an abusive monster, and Monty was a weapons dealer who saw people's lives as just stepping stones.
They both deserve karma for what they've done, but they changed/are trying to change.
Are they perfect? F*cking no.
Moon backslides a lot, but he keeps trying.
What do you do when you fall? You get back up. You keep trying.
Monty is a pretty decent guy now. He's one of the most loyal people in TSAMS. He practically worships Terra and would do anything for her.
He's always there when the family needs him and would gladly put his life on the line for any of them. (He has. Multiple times, in fact)
Can he be a butt to Sun at times? Yes, but it's fewer and far between now, and when the chips are down, he'd still die for Sun if he needed to.
Monty and Moon aren't perfect, but they're trying, and that counts for something.
But maybe it's just me, but I think some of the fandom has an issue with them trying to be good.
Everyone deserves redemption, but not everyone deserves forgiveness.
You can forgive but not forget. Don't forget their bad actions, but if they truly want to change and be good, give them the chance to.
You don't gotta like them, but give them the opportunity to show they can change.
Forgiveness is a hard thing. Take from me, the Catholic, despite my religion being all about forgiveness, I do struggle with that at times. It's hard to forgive people who wronged you, and it's even harder to forgive people who've done terrible things.
I get that, but whether or not you like it, you gotta give them the chance to change.
Monty has.
Moon is trying.
Sure, both slip up at times, but redemption isn't a straight and narrow path. It's a constant uphill climb to be better.
They wake up every day and decide to be better. That counts for a whole heckuva lot.
You can hate Moon and Monty, but you at least gotta give them the chance to change and have their happy ending if the universe decides they deserve one.
I just find it odd how some of this fandom can be okay with Eclipse and Ruin getting redemptions, but people like Moon and Monty don't.
Eclipse and Ruin did the same or arguably worse things. Ruin committed a multiversal wide genocide and Eclipse tried to take over the world and ruined a lot of people's lives just to hurt two people.
Eclipse and Ruin are terrible people, but they got their second chance. They had their redemption.
They got their happy ending. (Or kind of happy ending in Ruin's case... I mean, he's dead now. At least he can rest finally. )
Do they deserve to have their happy ending? No.
But did the universe/writers decide they deserved it? Yes.
There is nothing you can do to change that.
You can hate a character or love a character all you want. I'm not trying to change that. I just wanted to point something out that's been making me mad for a while.
Thank you for coming to my tedtalk.
