Ending [Drabble]
"Y-Yoshino! Yoshino!!"
He was supposed to stay safe while the fighting was going on. He was supposed to stay out of harm's way while the plan to defeat the Tree of Beginning was being carried out. So why was it that just when everything was finally coming to an end, he had to lose his life so meaninglessly? Because of all the debris flying about, Takigawa Yoshino had taken a broken plank from the Tree to the chest, as if to mirror what had happened at Mt Fuji. As a case of cruel timing, he had died shortly after the Tree of Beginning had been eradicated, leaving all Kusaribe clan members without their magic. With no medical professionals present and no way to heal his wounds magically, Yoshino passed away, seemingly without any reason. When she found him, Hakaze offered every piece of artillery and ammunition she could find with the hope that as the Princess of Beginning, some of the Tree's residual magic was still in her. Unfortunately, nothing happened.
Hakaze's chest and shoulders shook as broken, gasping breaths were drawn and released. Her eyes were wide, wet with tears and unable to move from that boy's face. Her stomach had dropped as waves of grief spread throughout her body, and lastly, there was a sharp, heavy pain in the center of her chest. It was like she was experiencing Yoshino's wound herself, and while there was nothing wrong with her physically, Hakaze could swear that there was a palpable pain running through her. Not once in her life had she experienced anything of the sort; compared to the light, warm feelings she'd felt when she first realized her love for him, it was cold and unbearable.
Her breath hitched in her throat as the sobs resurfaced and the anguish set in. What could she have done? She didn't want him anywhere near the battlefield, she knew, she absolutely knew he would get hurt. Why did she allow it? Why did she give in and let him have what he wanted? She should've put her foot down and stood firmly! It was her fault, wasn't it? Maybe it was her fear of him being injured that caused the Tree to make it reality in its one final act? She couldn't stand the thought of that. She couldn't bear the idea that she was somehow responsible for his death. She loved him. Even despite it being her first taste of love, she knew what she felt for him was true from the bottom of her heart. All the time they spent together, traveling to various cities, all the meals they'd shared together, all the conversations they'd had... It was never going to happen again, was it? "Yo--shi--no..." Hakaze's vision clouded in that moment and she collapsed onto Yoshino's body. Her right hand wrapped under his head as she buried her face in the crook of his neck and cried remorsefully.
Hours had passed since she'd found him. She had to be pulled away from him and held back by Mahiro as he was taken off to a coroner. Everyone had tried to comfort her, but nothing got through. Still wearing the same clothes covered in Yoshino's blood, Hakaze was curled up in a chair in her room, staring blankly into space. Streaks of dried tears remained on her cheeks, her lower lip still quivered every now and then, accompanied by a small group of sobs. Left alone with her thoughts, the guilt consumed her. It was her fault, she was convinced of that. There had to have been something more she could've done. She could've put him to sleep against his will until it was over. Even if he hated her for it, at least he would still be alive. She could've prevented it. She'd been able to do anything her entire life, she could've saved him if she'd desired it strongly enough. However, she'd been powerless; she currently was powerless. The Tree of Beginning was gone, and with it, everything that made her special. She'd lost all her magic, all her favor, and the one that meant most to her with no way to bring him back. What was she supposed to do now? Defeating the Tree was supposed to give everyone a happy ending. Wasn't preventing a tragedy what everyone was working for? Wasn't everything that had happened all because of Yoshino's influence? She couldn't see any logic in it, she couldn't find any reason for why he had to lose his life.
Now nearing midnight, Hakaze's eyelids were getting heavy, worn out from all her crying. Her feet slid from the seat of the chair and dropped to the floor, her hands moved to the edges of the chair arms to slowly push herself up, and as she put weight onto her legs after hours of inactivity, her joints popped as they stretched out. Still not in the mood to speak to anyone, Hakaze took several steps toward her bed and eased onto the edge of it, then lay down. As her head touched pillow, she mouthed his name once more, finally closing her eyes. A sigh followed by the feeling of two new trails of tears running down her cheeks to her ears was the last thing Hakaze remembered before drifting off to sleep.
