4. What compromises have they made with each other?

A lot, honestly. Winning the Reaper War only bought them so much leverage, and the demands they make of each other are extremely intense. As Spectres they transition into diplomatic/peacekeeping roles, acting as liaisons to the krogan and quarian/geth governments, mostly staying on the Citadel but occasionally making trips to Tuchanka or Rannoch. Caroline turns down an offer to be the human Councilor and gives up special forces postings. They're only nominally involved with the Alliance. Kaidan is a glorified bodyguard/house-husband for a while. In the early years they spend virtually all their (limited) free time with each other once their friends spread across the galaxy, which they know isn't the healthiest but they make work. That's not even taking the bedroom into consideration.

Kaidan gives in way more than Shepard, but he's happy to do that. If he weren't, Shepard would move the Milky Way to make him happy again.8. Do either have habits that annoy the other?

Kaidan tends to make noise in quiet rooms. Pen tapping, throat-clearing, datapad shuffling. Using gags and mag-cuffs made the problem worse. Now she puts on headphones or kicks him out. And no amount of threats or punishment will keep him from snarking at people who cook their steak past medium rare.

Caroline never does chores right in Kaidan's mind. For a marine, her hospital corners could use some work and she always stacks the dishes wrong. He's pretty sure she sometimes does things wrong on purpose just to watch him squirm. (He's also considered making the Blasto movies a hard limit.)35. If one was abducted, how would the other respond, and how capable of organizing a rescue would they be?

Oh my god I feel bad for those kidnappers. Caroline would be an absolute nightmare, but she'd be clever about it, pretending to cooperate until she knew the culprits, then coming down on their heads like the fist of an angry god.

But I actually think Kaidan would be worse. There would be nothing but greasy smears left when he was finished. You do not fuck with his Commander.

Kaidan sees pure, explosive chaos, snap freezes hit by a plasma bolts. Yet Maria’s magnetic. He feels her in his teeth. And it’s the discordant notes with her that somehow ring sweetest - evidence of a heart that bruised instead of broke, of beliefs and values that color every lightning-snap decision. Kaidan’s a worrywart who tries to pretend he isn’t. He hovers at the far end of the room, making up excuses to check up on her or bring her things. Occasionally she’ll send him on an errand just to get him out of her hair. (Maria’s the type who refers to lick her wounds in private.)

Maria’s awkward at first. She’ll come in a few times to check on Kaidan until he assures her she’s fine, then when he does need something be nowhere to be found. (She was trying to give him space.) They get a decent routine going with his migraines, though.

Once his implant starts to fail, she learns fast how to deal with around-the-clock care. Never complains once or makes him feel like a burden. When he tells her he knows she’d rather be out there fighting, she kisses his forehead and tells him to stop being a dipshit.36. Who handles spiders?

Whatever was open on Arcturus or the Citadel between assignments. They always pick different places since Maria's a vegetarian and Kaidan eats meat like it's going extinct tomorrow, then find some tiny alcove where they can meet up.22. What will their last words to each other be?

Kaidan likes the way her lip curls up right before she pulls her sniper rifle’s trigger.

Maria’s perversely fond of how Kaidan squeezes his eyes shut, just for a moment, when they find a dead body. Admires it, even.14. What was their first fight about?

During a routine mission, the squad encountered a thresher maw. It wasn’t the first they’d thought and the rush she’d experienced then had long worn off, so Maria decided to get out of the Mako and try sniping it. After a close call involving a high-explosive round fired directly into the maw’s mouth, everyone scraped out alive. Garrus was ecstatic and Ashley thought it insane but awesome, so they came back laughing.

Not so Kaidan. He read her the riot act, listing all the ways she could’ve gotten the squad killed.

That was when Maria realized she couldn’t just do stupid shit for the fun of it any longer. She was responsible for more lives than her own.33. How well would the couple do as a team in a bar fight?
