THE O U T S I D E R
Madelaine (or Maggie as she rather calls herself) grew up in South Colorado as an only child, raised by her mom alone as her dad walked out on the family when she was only two years old; this leaving them in a tight economic situation that followed Maggie throughout her childhood. As she grew older Maggie’s mother started worry about her current state as she often found her daughter talking to herself inside her room – conversations that could have been taken for childish games if the conversations hadn’t ended up being about Maggie herself and her mom always described it as she was talking to an old dear friend about her day. When her mother confronted her daughter about these conversations Maggie calmly explained that she wasn’t talking to an imaginary friend but to different people that passed through or lived in their house, but who couldn’t be seen by just anyone. What neither of them knew back then was that she had the ability to see and communicate with the spirits of dead people.
As she grew older her abilities grew with her, together with her thirst to figure out the unknown and the secrets behind the afterlife. Though, as one could have guessed, running around in school trying to brag about the fact that you can see ghosts never end well which was just what Maggie managed to do during her first week at school. Kids being kids some thought of it as “cool” and wanted to know more while some thought she simply made it up to get attention; but no matter what the attitude they all changed their opinion as times passed and Maggie soon got marked as the “weird one who talks to fake people”. The teachers started to think her behavior had something to do with her economical problems at home and often tried to discuss it with Maggie. It wasn’t until the start of middle school that she finally realized there were no use in trying to make people understand her abilities – mostly because they didn’t want to believe it – and because her mom begged her to stop, threaten to send her child off to a freak show unless she stopped pretending to talk to people who weren’t there. She bluntly refused to understand her daughter, finding more troubles in her behaviors and shortly found a way to hush her: she started to shame Maggie each and every time she dared speak up about her clairvoyance, telling her that was the reason her father had left and why no one would ever want to befriend her. It really didn’t take long for Maggie to catch on and a heavy anxiety came to develop as a cause of it, pulling away from people one at the time to assure her mother held no more reasons to yell at her.
It wasn’t until high school that she started to take things more seriously, doing more and more research in secret about psychic abilities, about how they worked and how you could improve them. She stopped listening to her mom’s worries even if she stayed on a low level, knowing rather well that people either believed in life after death or they didn’t. Things did however take a bright turn for Maggie as she met up with another girl named Serina who could view other people’s auras and read their energy. It didn’t take long for the two of them to form a friendship that quickly moved over to something more. Serina and Maggie dated for almost half a year before they had to break up, Serina not feeling overwhelmed by the fact that Maggie couldn’t seem to collect the nerve to tell her mom about her girlfriend. They decided they were better off as friends and stayed that way until the end of school.
Once high school was over Maggie had plans to wander off to college but quickly changed her mind when she stumbled over a medium that was helping out a family get rid of bad energy inside their home. Fascinated by the work he pulled off she started to wonder if she too could use her abilities for good and she decided to book a short meeting with the medium to discuss his career path. The medium ended up being equally as interested in Maggie and offered her a spot as his apprentice, seeing both potential and a driven force for the job. With that all her thoughts about college left her mind and she started to travel around with the medium across America to learn and finally understand her abilities; even against her mother’s demands. Her mentor made her feel safe, like she was whole and as if she finally had a purpose and it was a feeling she loved to cling to as if it was the end of the line.
It wasn’t until she reached the age of 21 that she stumbled over one of the last jobs she would do as an apprentice, helping a family communicate with their lost mother and wife, and it was also there Maggie met the current love of her life – Lola, they both found a connection right away that lead them to take a coffee the day after. At first they decided to just stay in contact over the phone as friends but the more they talked the more they realized they wanted to give a relationship a shot, so Maggie decided to leave the medium behind to start off on her own. As she reached the age of 23 she and Lola were still equally as invested in their relationship, they decided it was time for them to move in together and found a nice smaller apartment in Atlanta where they have lived since. Maggie is currently working as a halftime medium, doing everything between helping people communicate with dead family members or friends to cleanse people’s homes out of bad energy; while also doing her best to maintain a small business on the side focusing on natural body products and herbs. However neither of these two provides much economical stability for the girl and it happens more often than not that she has to lean on Lola for support, which is far from what she wants for the couple. Her dream is to reach far and wide, grow stronger than ever before and overshine her mother’s negative emotions regarding her daughter, but it’s a long way to go.
