Summary: You and Charles travel to your newly gifted home where you soon discover one of the hidden gems that Charles has planned for you.

The two of you arrived at your gifted home later than your husband had intended. Court business had kept him past the original hour of your departure, but that hadn't stoppered your plans.

Instead, you'd taken off as the sun dipped closer to the horizon, ensconced within the carriage he'd purchased as a wedding gift to you. While you were as proficient a rider as your husband, he hadn't wanted the cooler night air to affect either of you. Not when you both had an entire new home to explore and make your own.

By the time the carriage had crossed into the courtyard of the older estate, the moon sat high in the sky. Night creatures buzzed, chirped, and sang their sweet songs, keeping you company. They complimented the clomping of the many horses' hooves and the creak of the carriage and other wagons of your small convoy.

Charles had swept you up into his arms and carried you into the vast hall despite your protestations. A wide but tired smile lit up his features even as he murmured, "Hush, sweet wife, it's my husbandly right and duty to see you safely tucked away in our rooms."

The plush bedding proved too tempting upon being placed so lovingly. Soon enough, you succumbed to sleep's sweet temptation, barely stirring when your husband joined you. Neither of you bothered with trading your travel clothing for your nightgowns. Only the outer layers had been shed, content to sleep as you were.

The next morning, you woke first.

Turning, you caught the softened features of your slumbering Charles and pressed an even softer kiss to his brow. Your fingers played with his longer curls though you took care to let him continue to his slumber. He'd been working so hard with the Council and the King that you knew he needed this rest, this belated progress to oversee his newly bestowed lands. You intended to ensure he recovered in all manners necessary to keep your husband spry even for his advancing age.

As sunlight started to peek through the coverings over the windows, it called out to you.

Easing from the bed, you summoned a maid to your adjoining bedchamber where you soon made quick work with your morning routine. Your rumpled travel clothing was soon exchanged for a newer gown Charles had seen to procuring for you shortly after your nuptials. The heavier fabric would ensure to keep the chill of the air from touching your skin as you explored the grounds.

Once you had everything set to rights, you peeked out the nearest window and gasped at the sight below.

A hedge maze lay on that side of your new estate. In the middle, you could just make out something like a fountain though you couldn't be sure at that distance.

Hurrying from your bedchamber and past your husband's, you flew through the estate and out one of the side doors. You didn't dare stop until you came upon the hedge maze, gasping in delight at its sheer height. It was everything that you'd ever dreamed of owning when you mentioned it some months ago to Charles, never dreaming you'd have one like this.

Eager to explore its hidden depths, you moved toward the opening closest to your position. Little colored stones had been left in an urn nearby. You grabbed a good handful of them and put them in your pocket. They would help you navigate the maze, marking where you'd been and how to get out again. With every turn, you made sure to lay down a stone until you finally came to the center.

The fountain was far grander than you'd thought it would be. A group of sweet cherubs made up the center piece. Each held a bucket where water ran down into the one below until finally landing within the oversized pool. Tiny fish swam within. You could make out a few of them, but others' identifications escaped you. Along the outer edge of the pool and some distance back, you could make out a number of benches. Urns of pretty flowers sat on either side to provide some privacy for those seeking it.

Lost in your discovery, you didn't hear the approaching footsteps until warm arms wrapped around your middle. A solid chest met your back as your husband murmured, "Like your present, sweet wife? It's one of many I had drawn up in this estate's renovations."

"I love it, Your Grace," you breathed, leaning into him, "but I have done nothing to deserve such a kindness as splendid as this."

"You love me. That's worth more than you think." He pressed a series of warm kisses to your exposed neck and jawline. "Now, would you like to see the other hidden gems I had prepared or may I take you back to our bedchambers and properly love you?"

You bit your lip to hide your grin though a giggle escaped when he tickled your side.

"Both are too tempting to choose one over another."

You turned in his arms and allowed him to claim you in a promising kiss. A part of you had worried you wouldn't find marriage and wifely duties to be all that enjoyable, but Charles had been kind, patient. He'd taught you to seek out the pleasure he promised and how to return it ten-fold.

Despite the rumors of his past amorous adventures, he'd calmed down for you, gentled for you. His gaze, his actions, and his words all gave testament to his fidelity to you. To have such a grand lord as the Duke of Suffolk feel such for you, it was heady indeed. You could be certain he would stay true to his promise to never hurt you intentionally. He had his fears due to his past, but his very want to not hurt you meant something.

When he finally released you, you couldn't help the smile that overtook you then.

"Your Grace is well aware that I'm yours to command. Whichever you choose, I'm certain I'll be properly and truly pleased at the end."

The soft groan that escaped your great husband wasn't lost on you. It only made you fall that much harder for him.

Life might be full of surprises, but you were ready to face whatever came next with Charles at your side.

Duty had pulled him from your side so far into your lying-in.

Not that he would be much help to you during the actual birth, but he could remain nearby should you need him. He found himself liking being needed by you, his dear wife. It hadn't been so much like that before, but you were different, special, in a way that continued to elude yet delight him.

A messenger arrived late one afternoon during one of the Council's overlong meetings.

It hadn't taken Charles more than a few minutes to bid the others farewell and gain the Henry's permission to return to your side. After all, this was your first child together, and Charles had no intention of missing the first sight of his child. As much as he hoped this first would be a son, he truly longed for a healthy child.

Having been witness to Henry's own trails and tribulations with Catherine, Charles prayed nightly for a healthy child above all else. So many of their children had failed to live past infancy, let alone birth. Only one so far. A daughter. While Charles had no doubts she'd be great, he also knew, as did Henry, that the English people long for a male heir to the throne.

His horse was saddled and waiting for him by the time he arrived at the stables.

A brief thanks and farewell were all he tossed behind him, spurring his horse into a gallop before even clearing the city's main gates.

Charles had never been so grateful the estate you'd chosen for your lying-in hadn't been too far outside the city of London. He arrived home within the hour, leaping from his lathered, labored horse.

A stable hand took the poor beast's reins without a word as Charles rushed inside. He couldn't be certain he thanked the lad, but he would no doubt do so after checking upon you and his child.

The familiar halls did little to slow him down nor the servants who'd been busy with their daily duties. It was only at the door to your bedchamber that he was met with some resistance. The midwife didn't tarry him long though, merely gaining his word he'd take care of you and the babe. With his word, she stepped aside and let him into your rooms.

Upon seeing you sitting up and appearing quite well despite your ordeal, Charles felt his knees weaken. The fear of losing one's wife during childbirth was a reality that every man, high or low, had to face with each new pregnancy visited upon said wife. He could only hope at that moment that the birth hadn't been too rough on you and that any others would see you through safely and healthy. To lose you would be to lose a part of himself, a part he never wanted to see gone.

"You are well?" he asked, swallowing down his deepest gratitude and fear.

You, the earthly angel that was his wife, smiled wide as you caught sight of him. "A little tired, but yes, I am well, Your Grace."

He matched your smile.

The bundle in your arms wiggled at that moment, earning a soft chuckle from you. Your gaze dipped to the babe within though Charles couldn't discern any features beyond the tiny hand that reached out wildly. You quickly caught it and brought it to your lips for a kiss.

When you finally turned your attention back to your husband, your smile reflected the love already flowing through you for this new addition.

"Would you like to meet your son, my love?"

Charles's knees did buckle then, but he recovered quickly enough.

"I have a son?"

"You do."

It took him another moment to recall how to walk before he slowly made his way towards the bed's side. With each step, he tried to see more of his son, but the bundle surrounding the tiny boy proved too disguising. It was only as he stood next to the bed and leaned towards you that he caught his first ever glimpse of his son.

To say he forgot how to breathe would be a disservice to such a highly notable man of the English realm.

But he surely did. At least for a moment or two.

So in awe of the miniature image of himself, it took him another minute to see the minute differences. His son's hair was a shade or two lighter than his own but would no doubt be as thick or thicker. When his son blinked, he could make out eyes far bluer than his and far more knowing than Charles could ever dare to be.

Before he could think better of it, Charles reached out for the tiny babe and pulled his son from the bundle, eager to see the rest of him. Not that he doubted you'd done a fine job, but he wanted the honor and privilege to count fingers and toes as you'd done before his arrival. He wanted to feel his son in his arms without the burden of the bundle bedding around him. His own fur would be enough to keep the chill from touching his son while he got this time to himself.

"You are pleased, my love?" you asked after some time had passed.

Charles smiled with no little amount of fondness at his son, then at you. "I am beyond pleased, sweet wife."

You settled deeper into the pillows placed behind you, your eyes starting to droop. It was clear that your ordeal was quickly catching up to you, but you fought it. That spirit of yours was what had drawn Charles to you in the first place. You wanted this time between you as much as he did.

"What shall we call him?"

Charles chanced another glance at his content and sleeping son. "I'd like to call him Henry after the King. What do you think, sweet wife?"

"If it pleases you, Your Grace," you smiled, then worked to cover a yawn, "but I am biased towards Charles myself. He is your almost your spitting image."

You drifted off soon after, leaving the name debate unsettled.

Either way, it didn't matter to Charles as he continued to sit within your room, holding his son. He would never forget this shared moment even long after other children have come and all have grown to have children of their own.

No, this was a moment that would replay often even in gray hairs. It was a reminder of all he held dear and all he could've ever dared to hope for in his younger days. Those days prior to becoming a duke and to meeting you. To becoming a father. They'd all led him to the life he was destined to live, all the happier for having you in it.

WIP Week - WIP Most Eager to Work On

I hope it's okay that I tweaked today's prompt from Closest to Completion to Most Eager to Work On. A lot of my works are one-shots, but the longer projects are still very much in their infancy of being written out. Several are still sitting in either the idea or planning stages for balancing purposes.

For this one, I would have to say it's a story that was born of a request I got on my old account. It's been playing in my head for a while now, and I have a lot of it planned. At the same time, it's going to be more a play by ear type of story with how many parts it'll ultimately have.

This WIP is called The Youngest Boleyn Girl and features Charles Brandon from The Tudors with a Boleyn!Reader.

Our Boleyn!Reader, as the title suggests, is the youngest daughter of Thomas Boleyn. She does share some similarities with her siblings, but she's also a bit different in how her father doesn't quite indulge her as he does Mary, Anne, and even George. She's kinda just considered a spare with a lack of ambition compared to the others.

Yet, it's her kindness and lack of familial ambition that catches the attention of widower Charles Brandon, the venerable Duke of Suffolk. They first really meet at the funeral of Margaret Tudor, but they don't really get the chance to know each other until a bit later during a party Henry throws in Anne's honor.

From there on, the two find themselves in each other's company often and eventually find themselves engaged and wed with Henry's blessing.

The story will follow their relationship from those early beginnings through Anne's reign as Queen of England until her untimely end, which is also a cause for great concern for the new Duchess of Suffolk (aka our Reader).

It's a story that touches on many of my favorites: the Tudors (both the show and the historical era), strangers to friends to lovers, and even the established relationship they'll share, to name a few.
