It didn’t feel like 9 months later when Charlie sat on the side of the hospital bed, holding her newborn daughter in her arms and she snuffled in her sleep. Leona had decided to come into the world early, but that was just fine by Charlie. Leona opened her eyes again, and the bright emerald green of them was again a surprise to Charlie. They were fierce, just like her name. Yeah, she was going to be pretty cool.
Finn planted a kiss on Charlie’s forehead in apology, settling down beside her on the sofa. “Okay, I’m all ears.”
Charlie sighed, shuffling around on the sofa so she was facing Finn. “Well, I’ve been thinking, it’s nice just the two of us, but I can’t help wanting...more.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, a baby. I know you’ve always wanted kids. I didn’t used to, but I do now.”
“But, we can’t have kids.”
“I know, that’s where I was going with this. I was thinking, what if we asked someone to be a surrogate for us. The baby would still be ours, genetically, and we could actually have that.”
A huge smile broke out on Finn’s face. “You’re sure about this?”
Charlie nodded in response. “I’m sure.”
“But, wait. Can we afford this?”
“I’ve done some research, we can. We can go over it though, be absolutely sure this is what we both want.”
Finn wrapped her in a hug, a few happy tears escaping from the corners of his eyes.
Sitting down at their kitchen table with their drinks, Finn and Charlie took deep breaths and looked at each other, before looking across the table at their two closest friends.
Finn squeezed Charlie’s hand in encouragement, and she opened her mouth to speak. “Erm, we have a question for you two.”
Gemma shifted in her chair, smiling. “Sure, ask away.”
“Well, Finn and I would both really like a baby. But, the thing is, we can’t have children. So, erm, we were wondering, if you would consider being a surrogate for us. No pressure, or anything. We just wanted it to be someone we know.”
Gemma and Alexia turned to look at each other, having a seemingly silent conversation, before turning back to face the other two.
“We would have to think about it.”
“Of course! Take all the time you need.”
“So, what do you think? Do you want to do it?”
Gemma shifted in bed so she was looking right at Lexi, looking at the questioning in her eyes. “Yeah, I do. Only if you’re happy with it though. I might be carrying their baby, but you’ll be just as much a part of it.”
“Of course I’m happy with it. I’ve known Finn for over 10 years, he’s my best friend. I know how much this means to him.”
Charlie sighed happily as she strolled along the beach outside their house, leaning against her boyfriend’s shoulder. “Why were you so insistent on this beach walk?”
Finn moved to wrap his arm around Charlie’s shoulder, and shrugged gently. “Oh, no reason.”
Charlie laughed, poking Finn in the side. “You’re up to something, you.”
Further down the beach, Finn stopped walking, and as Charlie turned back to face him, he took her hands in his. “Charlie, I’ve got something to ask you.”
Finn knelt down on one knee, pulling the ring from behind his back. Charlie’s hands flew to her face, and she could already feel the happy tears leaking from her eyes. “Charlie...will you marry me.”
Charlie lept forward, embracing Finn and then cupping his face in her hands. “Of course I’ll marry you!! I was going to ask you if you do it soon!”
Hearing the phone ring and seeing who it was, Charlie called for Finn to come and join her. Sitting down on the sofa together, they answered, putting it on speakerphone and holding hands.
“Hello?”
“Hi...So we’ve made a decision. We can be surrogates for you.”
Charlie and Finn gasped, staring at each other and immediately bursting into happy tears.
“Thank you, thank you! We’re going to have a baby……”
