Back in 2022 I was asked to have a go at writing a song for a new TV show called “KAOS”. I was told that Charlie Covell - who had created the brilliant show “The End of The F***ing World” - was working on a modern re-telling of the Greek Myths, which sounded VERY much up my street. The scripts for the first few episodes were hilarious and conjured up such a fun, vivid world. Charlie was looking for an epic, earnest, over-bearing love song for Orpheus to sing in the first episode… it felt like my wheelhouse.
I’m disorganised & nearly missed the deadline to submit a demo, but after a night out in a South London pub, having chatted the idea over with some mates, I went home and wrote the song in the kitchen. You never know if songs like this will get used - or if you’ll even hear back - but miraculously they liked it, so I guess it was a night at the pub well spent.
Our US leg of the “Give Me The Future Tour” started a few of days later, so between gigs on a different time zone I’d zoom with Charlie to finesse the lyrics to make them fit the character and the world. I asked @charliebarnesmusic to help evolve the demo into something more guitar-led. We’re big ‘The National’ fans so we leant into their sound a bit (a lot), and worked on it in backstages and hotel rooms.
Cut to a few months later and we’re in studio 3 of *actual* Abbey Road re-recording the song. It was a surreal day laying down the music in the morning, before Killian Scott (Orpheus) joined us in the evening to re-record the lead vocals. He was busy shooting a Marvel TV show and KAOS - must have been a wild time - but hearing the actual character sing the song made it way more real.
A few weeks later Killian was singing the song to thousands of people in the Plaza de España in Seville for the scene you’ll see in Episode 1. Fast forward to now and KAOS (and the song) are out and in the world which feels very exciting. We’ve loved being a tiny part of this hilarious, twisted and brilliantly original show. It’s wild to see how many ridiculously talented people worked over so many years to bring it to life, so I feel madly lucky to have worked alongside them.
