There were certain things about herself that Mary Beth knew without question. The fact she wasn't an early riser was one of them, the only girl to sleep in later than her being Karen, who had the excuse of guard duty. Mary Beth didn't have that excuse, but she did have a new restlessness at night that made it hard to get a full night's sleep. All it took was the sound of foot steps coming and going for her to jolt awake, and one of the steps to the second floor creaked, which was as sure to wake her as a gun shot.
Eyes snapping open, Mary Beth took note of the footsteps. Not lumbering, so not someone drunk. Originating from upstairs, which narrowed it down even further, and the pace of the step as good as confirmed it was Abigail before Mary Beth ever straightened up on the little sofa that she called her bed.
"Abigail?" She called softly as soon as she detected movement in the dark, rubbing at bare arms as she slid from her bed. "Is Jack alright?"
