Pomegranate Seed

Edith Wharton’s “Pomegranate Seed” is both a tale of mystery and jealousy because its protagonist, Charlotte Ashby, is trying to find out more about the letters in the grey envelopes. Charlotte Ashby and her husband, Kenneth, are newlyweds who live in Manhattan. They were married shortly after the death of Kenneth’s first wife, Elsie Corder. After returning from their honeymoon, Kenneth begins receiving letters in grey envelopes. Charlotte becomes obsessed with them because of the adverse effects they have on her husband’s mood and longs to find out who they’re from. When she sees another letter on the table, she decides to open it but finds that she lacks the strength. So, she chooses to watch Kenneth open the letter instead. When she sees him kiss it, she demands to know who the letter came from and why he kissed it. Charlotte’s jealousy flares when her husband refuses to answer her; she’s certain that the letters are from his mistress. Thinking that a vacation may help her husband to forget the letters, Charlotte tries to convince him to go away with her. Kenneth refuses; Charlotte blames the letter’s author for his refusal—she’s convinced that he won’t leave because the “other woman” has forbidden it. Finally, Kenneth agrees and Charlotte feels triumphant—she feels as though she has won a great victory over the “other woman.” The next day, she is told to prepare for a voyage, but can find out no further information—she can’t reach her husband. In her jealousy, Charlotte fears the worst and goes to visit her mother-in-law, who says she hasn’t seen Kenneth. Eventually, they return to Kenneth’s house and find another of the mysterious letters. Concerned, Charlotte opens it and discovers that it’s from Kenneth’s first wife—she has won the love of her husband from beyond the grave.
