Rosseirys
"Rosseirys "Ro" De La Rosa is helping analyze DNA that she extracted from ancient bones unearthed in Uruguay — the remains of indigenous Charrúa people... [the team] assemble the chunks of DNA code they extracted from the remains into a sequence of 3.2 billion base pairs — a full human genome. The ancient genomes will then be compared with modern-day populations in South America to look for potential matches."
Very cool!
The Charrúa peoples were perhaps the best-known indigenous people of the Southern Cone in what was called the Banda Oriental. Other significant tribes were the Minuane, Yaro, Güenoa, Chaná, Bohán and Guaraní, and the Arachán. Languages once spoken in the area include Charrúa, Chaná, Güenoa, and Guaraní.

In Uruguay, population genetic studies focused on ancestry began in the 1980s. Around the same time, in 1989, the first association of Native descendants, the self-denominated Charrúa Indian descendants association (Asociación de Descendientes de la Nación Charrúa, or ADENCH) was founded. Until that moment, Uruguayan national identity was built upon the idea that, in sharp contrast to all other South American countries, the country lacked Native populations; this idea is still predominant in the Uruguayan self-image. [...] The reemergence of the Charrúas in Uruguay is now the subject of debate because it is not widely accepted by the general population and is questioned by some anthropologists. However, the number of Uruguayans that recognize themselves as Native or Native descendants is low. During the last National Census, which after more than 150 years was the first to include a question about “race or ethnic group,” only 2.4 percent of the population self-identified as Native and 5.1 percent as Native descendants. These numbers are clearly underrepresentations, if genetic data is taken into account (10-14 percent Native contribution by nuclear DNA, 34-40 percent by mtDNA). The declared numbers are more in agreement with those found for paternal Native contribution.
