Actavia glanced at the clock. Five minutes until Charra was supposed to arrive. Today was their first anniversary, and she wanted to make sure everything was perfect. Their first year had been a dream, Charra had brought such a light into her life- and she wanted to express that. The vegetables hissing in the pan pulled her attention back to the meal she was working on, quickly turning down the heat before they could burn.
The five minutes passed and Charra still hadn't arrived. Not that she was complaining just yet, she was still trying to finish the last bit of the cooking- she may have procrastinated a bit, sue her. But then another ten minutes had passed and she still hadn't arrived. She was beginning to worry until she heard a knock on the door. She wiped her hands on her apron before opening the door.
Charra was standing there. Her brown hair, usually pulled into a neat ponytail, was disheveled. Her lipstick was smudged and her eyeliner had begun to run, a stark contrast to the usual soft look Actavia knew. Her clothes, a formal blouse and a pencil skirt, were stained with splotches of colorful paint- which was quite on brand for Charra, but Actavia knew her girlfriend would never paint in clothes like these. This was something she would wear to a gallery.
"I'm so sorry." Charra spit out as soon as the door opened, stepping inside. "I was checking on some of the kid's paintings before I left but," she gestured to her clothes, "they weren't dry and some of them fell on me. I tried to get the paint off, but...I think I just made it worse." She groaned before continuing on. "And then I had to leave and didn't have time to change. I found out the bus wasn't coming, so I had to walk here. The wind kicked up about halfway through and ruined my hair...god, I spent an hour on it." She sighed as she curled a strand of her hair around her finger. "And of course, it started to rain just before I got here, so my makeup is just ruined..."
She took a deep breath before letting out a shaky exhale. "I'm sorry. I wanted to look perfect for today but...I just look a mess."
"Nonsense." Actavia interrupted her, wiping a splotch of yellow paint from her cheek. "You are the most beautiful person I've ever seen."
Charra's gaze softened and she relaxed into her touch. "You're just saying that to make me feel better."
"I'm not. I mean it. You are so gorgeous, Charra. I'm so lucky you're mine."
Charra softly chuckled before leaning in, kissing Actavia. Her lips were soft, tasting of the strawberry chapstick she had come to love. They pulled apart after a moment.
"Thank you, Accy. Happy anniversary." She smiled, brushing her hair behind her ear.
"Happy anniversary, Charra. To the first of many."
charra and actavia get caught in the rain
finished this last night and posting it before I go work on an essay (sobs) !! as always, its also up on ao3 if you'd prefer to read it over there !
"Oh my god, it's pouring out there." Charra grimaced as she looked out across the street, the rain beating down. She flinched as some of the rain dripped through a hole in the small cover they were hiding under. "We're going to be so soaked."
Charra and Actavia were on their way to meet Kyran and Marmalade to go out dancing, but the sudden showers had put a dent in that plan. Neither she nor Actavia had thought to bring an umbrella, leaving them stranded under the awning. She pouted, unsure of what to do.
"We could just make a break for it." Actavia suggested, but the roaring of the wind cut her off. It swept the rain sideways, drenching them in the cold water. Charra let out a gasp in shock as she clung to Actavia, shivering.
"Oh...my god." She murmured, flicking some of the water off of her. It was no use, she was practically soaked through. Actavia gently massaged her hand as she took a deep breath. "Well...I suppose we have nothing to lose now. Might as well."
And with that, they started off into the pouring rain. Actavia led the way, Charra following along and trying to shield her face as much as possible. They ran through the streets, giggling as they dodged and ducked under covers- but it was no use, they were already drenched. She sighed as Actavia pulled them underneath another awning.
"This rain has ruined our night..." she groaned, "my poor dress. How can I dance in this?" She gingerly lifted the red skirt, unsticking it from her thigh. She wrung some of the water out of it, cringing at the sight.
"Oh come on, it's not ruined. Kyran and Marm will let us use their laundry. It's just a temporary setback." Actavia reassured her with a squeeze of her hand. "Y'know what? Let's dance."
Charra looked at her, confused. "What are you talking about? Here?"
Actavia nodded with a grin, taking her hands as she stepped out from under the awning. "Well yeah, why not? We're already soaked, might as well have a little fun."
Charra chuckled, hesitantly following her lead. "But there's no music?"
"I can fix that," Actavia said before pulling Charra out onto the sidewalk with her. She launched into a rendition of David Bowie's "Let's Dance" as she twirled Charra around the street.
Charra laughed with glee before joining in herself, their voices mixing together, barely heard above the downpour. People glanced at them, but Charra didn't care. She felt on top of the world as she and Actavia danced in the rain. It felt like something out of a romance movie.

"What happened to you lot? You look like you've just been for a swim." Marmalade's eyes widened when they landed upon the two, their hands clasped together and cheesy grins painted on their faces.
"We went dancing." Charra answered simply, Marm giving the two a confused look.
"Right...well, you're not dragging all that into my flat." She mumbled before turning back, "Kyran, dear, can you get some towels?"
The four did eventually set out later that night to go dancing, Charra and Actavia now dried off and in warm clothes. She had to admit, while it was nice to not be sopping wet, it may have just been worth it for that moment.
