George Pocock, English schoolteacher, invented the charvolant, a kite-drawn carriage in 1826. A group of three charvolants once made a trip of 113 miles between Bristol and Marlborough. On another trip, a charvolant passed the coach of the Duke of Gloucerstershire, a breech of etiquette considered so rude that the occupants had to stop and let the Duke pass them.
