Chas was ready to be panicked and offended--but instead what he gets is mostly confusion. And a little bit of sadness.
He can’t say he totally understands, but he does hear the gist of it. That John no longer loves Zee. Might as well never have.
That alleviates the guilt that he feels for what he’d just done to John--doesn’t eliminate it, but it helps--but that leaves one end that Zee’s not touching.
