KLARION THE WITCH BOY in CHASE (1998)
Anyway people should read Chase:
it’s only 9 issues,
JH Williams III art!
it’s set during Cataclysm,
it faked me out about both an Etrigan appearance AND a Secret appearance (I’m about to go construct an elaborate red string theory board to show how it still is Greta),
Cameron’s dad was a terrible superhero, the ‘Acro-Bat’, who wore a costume with a mask that looks suspiciously similar to the one they keep using for Thomas Wayne’s Bat-Man costume,
It’s set in the DEO and the characters are sort of oblivious to how terrible the secret school for metas is,
Cameron’s sister Terry is a massive superhero fan and reads gossip magazines that contain superhero conspiracy theories,
Cameron described DICK GRAYSON as a “gorgeous gentlemanly rich snob” (say it to Dick’s face!)
Cameron thinks Batman is doing his own hacking and gets shocked at how cleanly Oracle tidies her attempted hack up,
Did I mention Cameron decides that Alan Scott is Batman? ALAN SCOTT!
Cameron investigates Davenport Industries as a potential source of Batman’s funding (J. Devlin my beloathed!)
Waller knew Cameron’s hopeless superhero dad,
Copperhead tries to kill Cameron. Cameron’s best friend Kate Spencer will later kill Copperhead. None of this will ever be referenced in the future when people are giving Kate a hard time for killing Copperhead.
Cameron’s squad of troubleshooters outside the DEO is herself, Peter her computer tech boyfriend who refuses to go get a job, Terry the aforementioned superhero-obsessed sister, and Knob a sometimes homeless guy she ran into while still a private detective in SF who turns up to hang out (he’s now living out of a camper van. In New York)
Cameron and her boyfriend Peter met online on what’s clearly Usenet and reminisce about how they’ve been online since before the Eternal September,
There’s a cult that worships ATMs.
this is so funny
Chase #8:
Cameron: I HAVE IDENTIFIED THE MASK
Ah yes, Cameron, when introduced to Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson and Alan Scott, you managed to pick…the Green Lantern out as a potential Batman.
Well done all around.
So Cameron goes chasing Batman across the rooftops! And oh no, catches him after he falls through a quake damaged building!
Oh yes, so noble, Cameron. You don’t touch the mask…
Poor Alan. Truly he’s completely oblivious to how all this was set up. 👀
Also on another note, you can pick out a JH Williams III book with very little effort. There’s so many giveaways in the page layout design.
I can’t get over this.
Imagine walking up to, I repeat, Dick Grayson, Bruce Wayne and Alan Scott, looking like THAT, and deciding that Alan is clearly the pick of the group to be the one keeping track of every single person in the room.
Like don’t get me wrong, Scott’s got more years of experience than the two men beside him combined, but is apparently the only one of the three giving any impression of obsessively monitoring everything going on.
The three of them are simply That Good.
Look! Supervillain Miranda rights!
…Right to maintain a secret identity until such time as charges are filed against you. You have the right to have an attorney present at the time of your unmasking. If…
Chase #4
I love this sort of thing. ❤️
Okay, issues 2&3 of Chase: Cameron STILL hasn’t met Director Bones (and they’re hiding it’s Bones, I’m going to feel so stupid if the DEO have someone else in this period), but she now HAS met Amanda Waller! Who knew her dad! Also she’s got to go to South America with the Suicide Squad for a mission. Nothing sus going on HERE oh no.
To my total amusement for future plot reasons, Copperhead is one of the Squad at this stage and tries to kill Cameron. I guarantee Kate Spencer has no idea this team up ever happened.
