CHASING THE DEVIL (2014)
This combines the “found footage” and “paranormal investigators” and “demonic possession” genres. Can one movie survive such a gross mash-up? Maybe.
Some guy’s sister dies gruesomely, but the authorities classify it as a suicide. The guy enlists the help of the “PARASHOOTERS.” This trio of paranormal investigators…are not assholes. They seem like decent folk, so they’re sort of disturbed when the guy indicates that they’re getting into something serious. They agree to help, and thus commences a somewhat ridiculous plotline where they attempt to track down the demon that killed the guy’s sister. The guy also has his documentary-filmmaker friend, so essentially there’s a lot of cameras.
First, they go talk to a professor of theology, with a “special interest in demonology.” He spouts a lot of crap about “opening yourself up to the demons” and is basically a comic book villain. The entire scene is ridiculous and over the top, especially when the professor looks straight at the camera and intones some creepy shit. AFTER THAT the people follow a set of clues, like those meddling kids from “Scooby Doo,” and the first guy they find is some stranger who stabs himself in the eye. The next clues lead to a teenager girl who’s being possessed, and she does a nice job of veering from upset and confused to focused and evil. She burns some letters into the guy’s chest and snaps her mom’s arm in two. She then writhes around a bit but she’s okay at the end.
Things go to shit after that. The demon is basically capable of possessing anyone at will, so THEY ARE ALL THE DEMON! One of the PARASHOOTERS gouges out his own eyes and dies. The next to die is the documentary-filmmaker-he has his hand cut off and then he’s electrocuted to death. After that the other PARASHOOTER guy tries to kill everyone, but the guy breaks a wine bottle in half and shoves it in his neck. The final girl slices open her own throat, and the guy is left unharmed. At the end he realizes that the demon wants him alive! He’s part of the demon’s master plan to bring about the end of days! Then the DEMON speaks to us and says that now we’ve opened ourselves to being possessed! Shit!
Overall, this is well-made. The production is professional and the acting is above-average. The possessed teenager was the standout, even if she didn’t really push the boundaries of the “possessed girl” trope. The main weakness here is the plot. There’s a lot that doesn’t make sense-like why did the demon have to leave clues so that the people could find it? What was the point of all that? Also, the guy had letters burned into his chest, which I imagine would be REALLY PAINFUL, but after one scene no one mentions that again. Finally, there’s a lot of empty space where nothing much happens, and that leaves time for you think about how much better this movie could have been.
Sometimes I check my pulse, cuz honestly, it's hard to tell if my heart is still beating
