“So how exactly did this happen?”
It was three-am in the morning and for the time being, the two boys had decided to stop at a twenty-four hour breakfast diner. It was Ryo’s offer; he figured that if they were going to talk for awhile, then he might as well treat Akira to some breakfast. Knowing what Akira was like, he would have to guess that he probably wasn’t going to leave him alone for the rest of the night any way.
Akira cut into one of his eggs and watched the yolk spill out onto the plate. As he took a big chunk of egg and gobbled it down, he turned his attention back to Ryo. His friend was sitting across from him in the booth, slowly sipping on a small glass of water.
“Are you alright to drink that?” he muttered, fork still in his mouth. Ryo nodded in response, picking up the glass. “I think I’m figuring out what stuff I can consume. And fortunately, it seems that water is still on the menu for me.” He took another gulp of water, just to calm Akira’s nerves.
Akira sunk back into his seat, cutting off another piece of egg and putting it into his mouth. “Well that’s good but-” He pointed the fork at Ryo. “You still haven’t explained how this happened.” Before he continued speaking, Akira took a moment to look around the room, just to see how private this conversation was.
Besides the occasional stoner or drunk who wandered in to have breakfast in the middle of the night… it seemed they were alone. Their waiter was currently cleaning a table on the other side of the diner too. Taking the chance, Akira leaned over closer to Ryo.
“How did you become a vampire?” He asked in a hushed voice, making sure that only the two of them could hear.
Ryo looked downward, wringing his hands together.
“Do you know what a ghoul is?”
“Huh?” Akira tilted his head in confusion, before quickly sitting back into his seat as their waiter passed by to clean up another table. When they were out of earshot, Akira turned his attention back to Ryo. “What are you talking about?”
“According to some mythologies, a ‘ghoul’ is a creature born when a human drinks vampire blood. They crave blood as a result. And they exist somewhere between life and death; they’re basically the living undead.”
Akira stared at Ryo for a few moments, processing this new information. “Wait-” he shook his head, as though that would clear up the confusion pouring into his head. “So are you telling me that you’re some type of ghoul? I thought you were a vampire.”
“No, what I meant is-” Ryo sighed, shrugging his shoulders. “I think maybe I’m the demon (or Devilman) equivalent of a ghoul? You did say that you fed me your blood.”
“So what you do mean to say is… you’re a vampire because of me?”
He hadn’t expected Akira to say it like that but finally hearing someone say what he’d been thinking for hours… it felt relieving. Although it didn’t help him feel any better. Ryo felt his eyes beginning to sting and his face was burning up.
“GOD DAMMIT”
The entire table shook as Akira slammed his fist down. The silverware bounced from the impact and even Ryo’s glass of water toppled over, spilling its contents. “Oh no!” He grabbed a handful of napkins and quickly started piling them on top of the growing puddle of water. “I’m so sorry, Ryo. This is all my fault and-”
His apology was cut off as Ryo brought more napkins over and laid them down. “Its okay.” He began to wipe up the water, making sure that any stray drops wouldn’t fall off the table. “You didn’t know that would happen.”
Hearing the gentleness in Ryo’s voice, Akira’s rage quickly melted away. “I know you say that now but… what will happen from here on out?” He paused to wipe up some water that Ryo had missed.
“Since I’m a Devilman, I’m going to be the enemy of demons. But what about you?” Suddenly his hand was stopped in place, another hand on top of it. Akira’s attention was pulled up towards Ryo, who was currently leaning over the table. He didn’t move his hand from on top of Akira’s own.
And with a tone in his voice that sent a chill through Akira’s whole body, Ryo spoke.
“I don’t care if I become the enemy of the entire world, so long as I have you as an ally. I’ll happily be at odds with everyone and everything. After all… I always have been.”
As Ryo spoke this, he wore a warm and genuinely inviting expression on his face. But there were tears spilling from his eyes.
