trouble found us // narcissa and evan
It had been a long while since Evan and Narcissus had spent quality one on one time together. Each time they saw each other, polite conversation commenced and promises were made to meet again soon, but plans were never made.Evan wasn’t sure when this distance had first sprung up between them, but its presence was an undeniable fact these days. Time, it was said, altered things, but Evan felt as though something else was going on. He and Narcissa were close as children and as teenagers; he and Narcissa were fine during Fifth Year, after all, so time really couldn’t have been entirely to blame for the change in their relationship. Still, things had changed so much that Evan felt as though he couldn’t fully reach his beloved cousin even when spending one on one time together. There was a block somewhere and he didn’t think he was to blame.
Bellatrix’s attack had shook Evan. That was another fact that there was no denying. He was certifiably on edge, to be sure, but what had happened to the eldest of their generation had unsettled him in a deeper way than mere adrenaline ever could. As naive as it sounded, Evan hadn’t thought that any of the family he liked would get hurt in these tense times. His father regularly put himself in harms way, Evan knew (in fact, he knew quite a bit more than he could safely admit, although he could tell there was *much* he still didn’t know; it was a topic he dared not ask about), but he didn’t particularly like his father at all. Even more so, Bellatrix was not involved in anything of that sort and had been attacked out of the blue by an aggressor skilled enough to *hurt* her. That was no easy feat. If anyone knew just how difficult that was to do, it was Evan. His only older cousin was a force to be reckoned with behind a wand.
Which is all to say that Evan had insisted he accompany Narcissa when he had heard she was heading off into Hogsmede. Everyone had said that these were dangerous times, but it was the first time Evan had ever felt that to be true. It was most definitely not a time to allow Narcissa to walk to Hogsmede alone, but moreso, it was his duty to also escort her back to the castle. (If Bellatrix could be hurt, so could Narcissa.)
Evan took a furtive glance at the sky. It was really far too dark for his liking. A glance at his watch told him they had missed dinner a while ago.
“We’re out far too late,” he said nervously. Leaves rustled behind them. Evan flinched and spun around, wand drawn before he had come to a complete stop. Seeing only a red squirrel, he exhaled and turned back to his cousin.
