The publisher of the Daily Mirror is considering using ChatGPT to assist in the creation of local news.

As media organizations consider how to use AI, the publisher of the Daily Mirror and Daily Express newspapers is investigating whether the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT could assist journalists in writing short news stories.

Reach CEO Jim Mullen told the Financial Times that the company had formed a working group to investigate how the tool could be used to help human reporters compile coverage of topics such as local weather and traffic.

"We've tasked a working group from our tech and editorial teams to investigate the potential and limitations of machine learning tools like ChatGPT," he explained.

"We see potential in the future to use it to assist our journalists with more routine stories like local traffic and weather, or to find creative uses for it outside of our traditional content areas."

Newsrooms around the world are debating how advances in generative AI, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard chatbot, will affect journalism production.

BuzzFeed announced last month that it would collaborate with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, to help create its viral quizzes, while CNET attempted to use the program to write economic explainers before critics pointed out multiple errors.

For years, some news organizations have experimented with AI. Since 2018, Thomson Reuters has used an in-house program called Lynx Insight to sift through information like market data to find patterns for reporters.
