Eclipsa Butterfly – fly 🦋
5/92
continuing my favs art challenge! Eclipsa got a really fitting word for her, and I imagined the palette a little differently, but I ended up going back to my favorite warm colors hahah

I'm not a big fan of this cartoon itself, but Eclipsa and her storyline are absolutely my favorite
You know, I think that what's really bothering me about Eclipsa is that we never see her meeting with monster leadership. I think that this is because the show simply assumes that she doesn't have to because she's the rightful ruler of monsters somehow, but even then, it's been 300 years, Globgor is still in the crystal, and she has NOT proven herself- monsters would've appointed their own leaders in her absence even if they did recognize her authority (which. No the fuck they wouldn't have.) and even if they were all on board with her taking charge, she'd still have to. Meet with them.
Idk. Her trying to convince mewmens to like her gets a lot of focus, but the possibility that monsters might have a problem with her only comes up in one episode... And, to my recollection, that's just another "both sides" situation, where the conclusion is "well, can't please everyone", without, say, examining the fact that monsters would have vastly different criticisms of Eclipsa than mewmens would.
I feel like the series... really suffers for this, if they didn't kinda assume that Eclipsa was the leader of monsters now and had her meeting with the leaders of various monster factions, I think there'd be far less of a sense in some corners that she's favoring monsters- and it'd be more respectful to monsters, giving them a role in fighting their own oppression while making clear that they've been doing so all along. Treating them as serious political players instead of condescending to them.
I'm curious to know how you imagine the relationship between Eclipsa and Toffee.
(I apologize if the translator fails.)
Childhood best friends gone horrifically sour… but maybe circle back to friendship?
Eclipsa made a spell that can kill septarians but gave moon a variant created with the intent to crumple but store the body of the killed in the wand. (When moon is casting the spell, Toffee doesn’t recognise it. When his finger is shot off it disappears, but moon is storing the finger in a little bottle. The finger had to be reattached to regrow proper ). It does kill the target, but they can be restored.
so many possibilities…
Eclipsa would HAVE to actually interact with monsters and test how true she is to her word and toffee would have to show bits of what he knows and show his true self a bit. Overall they would be constantly forcing eachother to show themselves a bit.
Something I will say I find interesting about Solaria is that her chosen from of manipulation is flattery. In some aspects I don't doubt that it does cross over into genuine appreciation -- despite everything I don't doubt that she did "love" Eclipsa, or that her trust in her closest associates like Mina and Alphonse was real -- but more often than not it's given with the purpose of buttering up the recipient into being more favorable to her orders as to give them the impression of willingly partecipating.
This is most evident in Eclipsa, of whom Solaria often highlights the intelligence and tenacity. Those are things Solaria finds remarkable, but that ultimately aren't worth feeding into; Eclipsa's positions on monsters aren't to be listened to and her life has already been planned out for her, ironically limiting the freedom those admirable qualities would naturally incline her towards. It's obviously controlling but also condescending, in a way. "Oh, so cute. Look how smart my little girl is"... the way you'd treat a pet. One you care for very much, but a pet, nonetheless.
(It is to be noted that Solaria says [wrongfully as supported by evidence] that Eclipsa is all she has in the world and viceversa, crossing the line into enmeshment. You could argue she sees Eclipsa as an extension of herself.)
Because of this, Eclipsa never really finds it in her to directly confront her mother, nor does a different solution from what she envisioned ever appear possible. One of her worst traits is avoidance, which is likely a consequence of having been both suffocated and neglected by someone who claimed loudly and proudly to adore her above all else.
She also does this to Mina in a way that is much more obvious to the audience. Although she doesn't single Mina out first, as soon as she's given an opening she jumps (literally) to the occasion and plays on flattery to push her to take that final step towards joining the cause. The scene itself even highlights its malicious nature through the usage of music. She offers the world to a girl she knows has nothing and gleefully accepts her under her wing once she takes the offer, going so far as to highlight her as an example to follow. Solaria valued loyalty above all else and Mina reshaped her entire identity around the high of that approval.
Of course, this doesn't mean Solaria owes her any loyalty. Of course not. Rules for thee...
