The Deval of Maharaj Ajit Singh

Built circa 1736 CE, the Nagari elevation and statuary of Hindu deities gives this cenotaph (funeral memorial) an almost temple like appearance.

Day 442 of 'A Photograph Every Day For The Rest Of My Life' Monday 10th October 2016 'The Chattri' Anita and I had been meaning to visit the Chattri that sits in a majestic spot on the South Downs over looking Brighton for some time, this morning we finally made the effort and walked there. This memorial was built to honour the Indian dead of the First World War, it stands on the Downs near Patcham at the place where Hindu and Sikh soldiers who died in Brighton war hospitals during 1914-1915 were cremated. It was unveiled by the Prince of Wales in 1921. Today's photograph was taken whilst standing in the Chattri facing outwards over the downs. Photos from yesterday’s service at the Chattri memorial in Brighton.

The Chattri commemorates the 72 Indian patients who died in Brighton’s WW1 Indian Military Hospitals. The monument marks the spot where 53 Hind and Sikh men were cremated at an open ghat on the South Downs.
