I’m around 30. Back in my day we kept being a geek a secret. We didn’t talk about our fanfiction and show off our fanart. But also back then we cherished each others works. We were so happy that we clicked with another person we rooted for them no matter how wild it was. We were happy with a little flower and not a bouquet.
Now days its death by canon.
Now days the only way to feel validated is by canon.
Ideas circle around canon and it becomes a fish bowl.
One reason I’m so excited for this extended break (besides the obvious that its gonna turn out amazing cuz fuck crunch culture) is cuz I’m hoping it breaks this mentality. That FNDM can see the wonders in fanworks again. CRWBY started off as geeks. Just like us.
You want more shit like RWBY? You want more queer and subtle storytelling? Support fan creators. Fanworks are often training wheels and practice for something greater.
Second reason I’m so excited for this its giving time for creators to breath. I’m seeing such AMAZING work that doesn’t get enough love because it’s hiatus. This burns artist and writers out faster AND loops back into fishbowls ideas.
Feedback culture took a dive. Artist and writers rely on notes and the vibe of the community to critiqued an individual work. Creators do want their works to be seen cuz it recharges them to grow, but FNDM inadvertlys narrows down this growth o the most popular trend. Which is why you’ll see a burst of the same ideas over and over again.
Which is why you see the same stagnation in popular media. The training wheels they had before the industry limited their creativity and was further narrowed by the industry.
tdlr; support fan creators and the things you like if you want to see more of it, water your garden.
