     He pretty much waits for her word at the end of the class — he sees the mix of students ( Gryffindor were always tough to teach ), getting up and getting ready for their next class, occasionally having a brave student or two to wave at him or even mumble a small goodbye. It was progress, he thinks, at the beginning of the school year most students wouldn’t even talk to him.

     ❝ — I haven’t gotten the chance to congratulate you on your last game, Miss Johnson. ❞   He says when he thinks it’s safe, the thought of embarrassing her in front of her friends was terrible, kids can be cruel. it was also quite amusing to see the Ravenclaw support the Gryffindor team so passionately, while it was not his vocation, he did admire the game itself.

these days —and he says ‘ these days ’ , but more often than not , he’s so lost in time that he doesn’t know which days are which— he finds it all too difficult to be anything but neutral , noncommittal. his words are fleeting and weightless , hollow and habitual , but the good news —and he says good news as if he knows what good news is— is that he’s ACUTELY AWARE OF IT. 

like now. 

because it’s obvious , not simply by the words but the tone they are delivered in ,that she is looking for something. and she is looking for something in him. and beyond that , she is trusting him to offer it to her once she finds it. or so she can.

and what’s more , she’s trusting him to trust her with it in the aftermath.

instead of making a further fool of himself , he sits back down beside her with a smile. or something reminiscent of. and then , as if to reiterate ,  ❛ i’ll stay. ❜
