here’s some snacks that i’m pretty sure you can find for fairly cheap! look into your local dollar store / bulk food store. pricing is in CAD. it’ll probably be a bit cheaper for US peeps!
nuts - i love cashews, but they’re pricey. i can get a decent bag from the dollar store for $2. there’s also usually trail mix or mixed nuts.
jerky - i prefer a little higher end farmer’s market stuff, but again, dollar store!! $2.50 for a decent pouch of jerky, and the stuff is usually room temperature friendly if it’s jack link’s or another brand.
granola bars - try to buy something like nature valley, where it’s a little more protein or grains. i really like made good’s chocolate chip granola bars! there’s vegetable servings you don’t notice. Also just super tasty. I personally like made good’s chocolate chip granola bar, or nature valley’s sweet and salty dark chocolate and nut
stay away from more junk food stuff - buy some as a treat, but try to make sure you fill up on more protein related foods first!
if you have to have sweets:
pocky typically goes for about $2 for plain strawberry or chocolate, but you can spend $3-4 dollars on the other more luxury varieties.
ramune / marble pop can be found at asian grocery stores, and i’ve found some for fairly cheap at other grocery stores in the asian food aisle. They can go for about $2-3 dollars there, where as cons might have them for 4 or more dollars.
in general, check your dollar store, walmart, and keep an eye out in grocery stores! if you can afford a membership, or have a friend who does - costco and sam’s club are excellent resources for bulk purchases!
A rich and sweet pumpkin molasses bread that is perfect for any holiday gathering.
Simple scones spiced with classic chai spices like cinnamon, ginger, and cloves.
I remember seeing the signs months ago that they were building a new asian grocer in Henderson, but now it is here! I suppose it may have been open for a while but seeing as I never go around that area, I didn’t have a clue.
This place is located behind the Countdown on Lincoln Road and is the biggest Asian supermarket I have been in so far in my life. There are fresh fruit and vegetables, frozen foods and also a small bakery in the back. They offer a loyalty card where every 500 points you accumulate, you get a $10 voucher. I did a small shop there and here is what I got!
I saw that they have the american brand Lays, and I grabbed a few flavours. American Original, Italian Red Meat, Garlic and BBQ. So far, out of the American Original and Italian Red Meat, I prefer the American. Although it’s just a plain potato chip, it tastes great. Somewhere between a kettle chip and a pringle. The Honey twists I had tried when a work colleague had them and the taste reminds me of marmalade toast, without the peel. The Smokey Bacon Chips are puffed and delicious. Not a strong and overbearing flavour which is just nice. Best thing is that each packet of these chips is under $2.00 each!
These delightful little things are cookies and individual cakes. The cookies were sandwich ones and as the packaging displays, just simple cookies. The flavours were typical and generic but have cute little images on them. The cakes are very crumbly but taste very nice! The cookies were an amazing $0.49 and the cakes are even better at $0.29! What a deal for a little snack!
A random assortment of goods! From the top left, there is BBQ Ramen snack, Lonely God Bacon Chips, Egg Crackers, Mango Pudding, Strawberry Ramune and Coated Peanuts. I have yet to try the egg crackers, but all else is pretty good! The Ramen is very crunchy but comes in little nuggets. The LG Bacon chips look like spiral pasta which is cute. The mango pudding is awesome. The Ramune however, needs a strong hand to open. It has a little plastic part which you press in the top with some force to be able to open. But it does taste wonderful. The peanuts I might pass on next time. I liked the taste of the covering but the peanut was a bit soggy so I didn’t enjoy it. Each of these items are roughly $2-$3 each.
Here we have corn snacks which are both Garlic and BBQ flavour. I’ve had a few different brands of these and I love them. Also here, are the most expensive things I had seen in this place which are the Green Tea and Cheesecake KitKats. They are the most glorious things I have ever tasted and I love Japan for inventing them. These are about $8.00 while the corn snacks are around $1.00.
There are a lot of vegetarian options in the freezers too! i am so amazed at the things available for them that I cant wait to try them myself!
The membership cards are free and can be collected as you pay for your items. The only thing is that the card is not able to be registered so I would be mindful that you dont lose it ans someone else gets your points. I love this place, the staff are super friendly and I see generally all the things I need to make some awesome food recipes myself.
If you have a chance to go along, let me know what you think!
