The purpose of the “cheat lateral” is to create an opportunity for eccentric overload (a tried and true mechanism for hypertrophy). Use a controlled cheat to get to the position from which you perform an even more controlled eccentric. Be sure to maintain the same proper mechanics on the raise (no pouring the pitchers!!) by keeping those thumbs higher than your pinkies. Let your torso rhythmically help control and absorb the dumbbell through each rep much like a pair of reins would a horse!
