Ok, so that may be a *slight* exaggeration, but it is certainly the root of all my lack-of-concentration.

I realised, as I sat at my desk, looking out over a bus lane (and some fairly attractive men in the houses opposite...) that whenever I cannot concentrate (providing said gorgeous men are not at home) I go on Facebook and see what's happened. Invariably, nothing of note has happened; someone will have posted a quirky video from YouTube of a cat playing the tuba or making spaghetti bolognese, but in general, nothing happens. My lefty friends use Facebook as a noticeboard, though more frequently a sounding board, to post police brutality articles from The Guardian or similar. But Facebook is essentially a place where people go between lectures or events in the day to fill a few minutes (or longer...). You faff around following a labyrinth of links until hours have gone by and you're about to be late for something. It's quite frankly pathetic, and yet it's something every student is guilty of on a weekly, if not daily, basis.

The internet fragments our ability to concentrate, bombarding our brains with a barrage of options, links, pathways - ★ ☆ ✰ CLICK HERE FOR FABULOUS FREE STUFF THAT WILL GIVE YOU FUCKLOADS OF VIRUSES ✰ ☆ ★ ... And so before I finish this inordinately long blog, may I make a plea, dear internet user with a similarly fragmented brain? Switch off for one day a week. Have 'Facebook-free-Fridays' or something. Just see if you can do it, and see if, after a few goes, it has any positive effect on your ability to apply yourself to a task. I'll let you know how it goes for me.
