“So, Jake, when are you going to pop the question?”
“Yeah! It’s been so long…” his sister’s daughter lowers her voice, “already treats me like her niece too.”
Jake doesn’t hear her, too busy texting you. “Huh?”
His mom gently puts down his phone. “Are you going to ask her? She called me yesterday about your vacation next month.”
“I’ve always wanted to go Tokyo—and popping the question on vacation is cute, you can use it as a little getaway too.” His sister adds.
Jake frowns, thinking for a moment. “Oh! Are you talking about the big-big question?”
“Yes!” His sister grins, leaning forward. “Are you?”
“Well… I don’t know, I’m sort of nervous.”
“Why?” His mother asks, “you’ve been together for so long already.”
Jake doesn’t catch the last part. He frowns, twiddling his fingers. “What if she says no?”
“She won’t.”
He rolls his eyes, “If I show her pictures beforehand, hopefully she’ll give in.”
His mother and sister shoot each other confused glances, his niece the first to speak up. “Huh?”
“Oh! I didn’t show you all yet. Steve’s mom got him a new fish but it turns out it doesn’t like his current fish—he doesn’t want to sell it so I asked if I can have it.” Jake rambles, swiping through photos on his cellphone, grinning at the little pet. “He’s so cute, but I don’t know if she’ll say yes since pets are big responsibilities, but maybe you’re right and asking on vacation is best. I have the perfect spot for a tank too!”
