Hope your performances are going well!

Oh my god, Eli, it’s been incredible!  We’ve sold out twice in a row now after having a record-breaking opening night attendance. The calibre of talent is really top-notch, especially the men who have overcome some serious anxiety to give an outstanding performance.  It has been exhausting and exhilarating and all-consuming, and I can’t believe I only get to do it four more times before it’s over.

What was the most challenging part of the play?

The music.  I’ve never done a musical like this before. Although I did pretty all right in the end, I was very stressed out about it at the beginning,  and at one point I really thought I couldn’t do it.  I just wasn’t confident in my singing voice. I have a limited range, and the director was unwilling to change the music to better suit my voice, and I ended up giving away part of a song to another actress.  That sucked for my ego, but once it was done, most of my anxiety lifted and I was able to actually start enjoying the music.  With practice, I actually sounded pretty good, I think.  But it was hard.  I don’t deal well with things I’m not immediately good at - it’s a character flaw.

Ugh, brother, I don’t even know.  I mean, I’m upright, I’m healthy, my play is going well, there’s a terrifying fascist bringing fresh horrors to my front yard on a daily basis, and I’ve switched from being mostly sad all the time to mostly angry. Progress . . . ? 

How about you? I saw that you mentioned you were having a bad week. I hope it improves, and I hope you remember how many people love you.

Paintbrushes: Do you have a creative past-time?

Writing, sometimes, though I wish I was better at getting all of the thoughts in my head onto paper! My mother also just recently entrusted me with her old 1980s film camera, so I’ve slowly been working my way into that as a hobby.
