It was Fathers’ Day today so we were going to watch Das Boot but I was in the mood for a more light-hearted film and we ended up watching Chef. Here is my review.
So John Favreau plays Carl Casper, a good chef who feels like he is being creatively restricted. He has problems with his family. He quits his job and goes on the road and pretty much everything you expect to happen, happens.
The best thing about this film was the food shots. O the food shots. They made my stomach growl. Luckily I was eating pizza throughout so I could manage. The cast was pretty good. I liked John Favreau; he provided a few laughs and really sold his love of food. His son (Emjay Anthony) was also pretty good, especially considering that he was a child actor who didn’t make me lose all faith in humanity. The final good thing was the music which really added to the tone and mood. It also helped the characters’ personalities; it really felt like it would’ve been the music that they would be listening to.
I felt like this film dragged on a bit. There were a few scenes where I was thinking “Is this really necessary? Haven’t we seen enough of Sofia Vergara and John Favreau on the phone?”. Also, as I said earlier, the plot is incredibly by the numbers. There were no real surprises at all. Finally, and I’m straight up going to spoil the ending here so if you care I suggest you avert your eyes, at the beginning, Casper is frustrated because he has to answer to the restaurant owner. He buys his truck and is master of his own destiny and then he goes and just allows someone to be his boss again. He went from point A to B and then back to A again.
In conclusion, Chef was an alright movie and a good way to spend a couple of hours but not something particularly ground-breaking or memorable.
