July 24 1917, Chemin des Dames
Worked all last night and this morning. Big attack at early hours this morning and French gained two miles of territory. 600 wounded were carried by our ambulances. Enemy desperately trying to break our lines here. Attacks are growing in intensity every day in this Craonnelle sector. Every night the French have been sending up big guns and regiment after regiment of fresh troops. Casualties are extremely heavy. I have just been relieved and am ready for a good long sleep. The work has been strenuous. Senegalese troops have just passed on to the first line which surely means a fierce attack.
