i did an oc drabble. how ollie feels about chena, and how chena feels about home.
Rain was pounding against the window; the chill of the night gave Chena a shiver. Most days, the too-big and too-empty house that she lived in was empty aside from her. Only her and her mother lived there, but her mother left so early in the mornings and came back so late most nights that Chena couldn’t even bring herself to stay there. It was too quiet, too creaking, and too empty. Too many times had she heard a bump in the night and had to run to a friend’s house because she had scared herself into thinking someone was in the house. It may have been where she lived, but somehow it had never felt quite like a home. Even at fifteen she was still left shaking under her sheets when the wind made branches scratch against her windows, or her cat knocked something over and she swore it was a poltergeist. She pulled her blanket tighter around herself, and clutched her phone tightly in her palm. Her phone vibrated in her hand, making her jump even though she was expecting it. The voice on the other side of the line soothed her, just as she knew it would when she answered.
“It’ll pass.” Ollie said quietly. She could hear the sound of the music in the background. “I’ll stay on the phone until you fall asleep.” She murmured an answer that she knew he probably didn’t understand, but he didn’t say anything.
“It’s supposed to rain all night though.” She replied, coming out more as a whine than anything.
“It’s not going to last forever.” He answered solemnly. She could picture him leaning back in his desk chair, phone balanced on his shoulder, scrolling absentmindedly through social media sites she’d never heard of. She tucked a stray hair back into her ponytail, and pushed a fluffy pillow over her uncovered ear. A few minutes of silence passed. She’d closed her eyes, but her selfishness kept her from making any actual attempt at sleep.
“I still can’t sleep. Can’t I just go to your house?” She heard the childish tone in her voice and hated herself a little more.
“It’s late and it’s raining.” He paused, but she didn’t say anything. “I’ll go wake up my mom.” She heard him put the phone down and as always the guilt her like a truck, but her fear overwhelmed it. Even if he was annoyed, he didn’t show it. He came back a minute later. “I’ll be there in a few minutes.” She apologized, and she knew he heard it, but he didn’t answer. When Ollie came to the door with an umbrella, she wasted no time in locking the door behind her and clinging to him. He pulled her closer under his umbrella, and pushed her gently toward the car. She was sorry to bring him here in the middle of the night, but Chena was never sorry to leave the house behind.
“I’m sorry.”
“You said that already.”
