How to communicate using Tumblr tags.
Now askbox messages are rebloggable, Tumblr is at least 30% less impossible to use as a communication platform. However! I've noticed that a lot of people don't know seem to know how username tagging works?
The idea is that if you track your username tag (for example, I'm http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/hellotailor) then whenever someone tags a post with your username, you'll see it. For example, when I answer an askbox message from cherrybina, I'll tag it with #cherrybina so it shows up on her tag: http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/cherrybina.
BUT. Many people don't seem to realise that reblogs don't show up on public tags. As in, when you tag any reblogged post with anything, it only appears on the tags on your own blog. So if you reblog something and tag it with #hellotailor, I am never going to see it. Ditto any other tracked tag.
Also:
Yes, I know some people reblog stuff and tag it with their friends usernames, knowing that their friends will check their blog personally. However, this only works if you've already told each other what's going on, and can never function outside of your immediate social circle.
If you have a username that's already being used as a popular tag for something else, like "moriarty" or "cupcake", then you're probably going to have to tell people to use a different tag, like #moriartymessages #cupcaketag.
Edited to add: Remember, only the first 5 tags on any given post will show up on tracked/public tag searches!
