thoughts on maximalism?
the only valid decorating standard, honestly.
life is so short and brutally and insufferably long at the same time. why paint the walls grey and look at empty shelving all day when you can have things that spark joy.
because joy is . . . both a way to keep going thru the hellscape we currently exist in but equally a way of rebellion against the hellscape too. it takes effort to be joyful. it takes even more to share it. so if a trinket on the shelf, fifty books, and painting the walls chartreuse will keep you fighting against fascism for another day, paint the walls baybeeee.
of course, there is a fine line between maximalism and hoarding. and an even finer line between maximalism and gauche lack of taste. and whilst i'm not the arbiter of taste -- i say this so often at this point it might as well be my catchphrase; i am not the arbiter of taste! -- over consumption is a hell of a drug and finding the balance between maximalist joy and consuming purely to fill the void is something everyone has to navigate on their own. be careful. consumerism is just the clownish arm of capitalism, bread and circuses bread and circuses bread and circuses.
to put it plainly: howl in miyazaki's howl's moving castle has my ideal bedroom. but don't get sucked into capitalism's sticky web trying to produce dopamine.
for the ask game:
25, 22, 14.

25. create any characters (in games, art, or writing) this year? describe one:
unfortunately i cannot speak of just one character i created this year, this two come as a pair and i must speak about them together.
these two are sims i created this year. i don't know why but i got a hankering for creating occult sims in the sims 4 because i hadn't created any in a long time and i made them -- they are vampire siblings and altho she is the older of the two, because she was turned at a younger age than he was (by the same vamp), he is now physically older than her.
the photos above are their dark forms in their regular clothes. he is a master thief and she is a botanist. she can go out in the sun for longer than he can as she's been a vampire longer but because of their physical ages, he is more world weary and brooding and she is still quite playful as a vampire. she has a child with the grim reaper and he's in love with the local witch.
they're so stinking cute! their ears stick out the same amount.
22. favourite place visited this year:
i was very lucky to get away for two weeks this summer to italy. most of it was spent on the amalfi coast but i did get to rome for three days and while we were there -- we being myself and glen cos who else would i travel with? -- we visited some churches and this church.
(i know it's a dominican order church but i cannot remember the name.)
this church had the most beautiful ceilings. the baptism chapel was a dream. just look at it! (i'm certain i posted this photo previously on this blog and i'm sure i put the name but i can't find it right now.)
14. favourite book of the year:
like the previous ask re my favourite movie of the year and not remembering any movies i saw, i know i read books this year. i read a lot of books cos that was something i told myself i was gonna do. but what the fuck did i read?
the only one i can think of is bad gays by ben miller and huw lemmey, queer historians who wrote a book outlining the lives of various complicated and evil queer folk thru history.
it was thought provoking in how it made me view queer history as a queer person and how acknowledgment of harm caused by other queer people is something the queer community should engage with.
and the book cover was neon pink with neon yellow "BAD GAYS" written across it in gothic font so. i'm sure people on the bus as i was reading thought i was some kinda homophobe.
